I agree Speed1y!
Too, they need to stop leasing properties from individuals and either fix and use their government owned buildings or sell them if they are not in use! The VI has enough property to sell to get some of this mess off our books! Stop hurting the consumer! We've been hurt enough!

Saw brand new slot machines in SJU airport last week. It looks like an act of desperation on the part of the Pourto Rican government to me. No one was intrested in them.

We dont need legal pot, gambling, or sin taxes, what we need is a responsibe local government.

Prohibition causes black markets, black markets invite crime since there is no other recourse for protection or conflict resolution.

we DO need legal pot, and gambling (not sin tax).

but we also need a responsible local government, and we KNOW that WILL NOT HAPPEN with out a MAJOR CATASTROPHE (which we seem to be headed to).

So... when you know you need the medicine, but it tastes terrible.. you cringe and swallow right?

Mr Map, (I'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard this) Prepare to swallow!

"He spoke of Revenue Anticipation Notes, which allows the government to secure funds to be paid within a year with monies generated through property taxes (Mr. Collens mentioned local banking partners) as a way to possibly keep government services running and some employees from being furloughed."

Seems like they still are blowing snow. They want to get a payday loan but they don't realize that they have to cut the budget first.

This article was REALLY interesting - $300,000 will be spent to "write our story and make sure that the national media, particularly in the financial markets” understand “what’s going on” locally.

“What this does is demonstrate to the markets that the government is fully engaged in the financial conditions of the territory and that we’re taking real action to address those issues once and for all,” Gov. Kenneth Mapp, who is also PFA chairman, said after the meeting.

I'm not all that willing to endure the crap that will come along with all the cutbacks. We'd be willing to tough it out if we had any indication that government as usual was going to change even slightly. But we just don't see that. We've already started looking into moving elsewhere.

The question remains, if they get their hands on more money, through selling more bonds, gambling, legal pot sales, sin tax, ect..., does anyone honestly believe they'll use those new funds Responsably ?

In Pourto Rico, the current Govenor is pushing hard for another statehood vote. Their last vote was closer to passing the measure than ever before. I would think, considering their current financial condition, there's a very real possibility of Pourto Rico finally becoming the 51st state.
Could this be the same answer for the USVI?

US Congress and POTUS also have to approve statehood after territorial referendum and VI government and constitution must be in compliance with the U.S. Constitution.

The Republican congress would have to approve PR statehood. Why would they want 4M more Democrats? Who like other Democrats want financial assistance.

Never will happen, NO state is going to give up electoral votes.

Don't believe any state would be directly giving up electoral votes.

Every state is allocated a number of votes equal to the number of senators and representatives in its U.S. Congressional delegation—two votes for its senators in the U.S. Senate plus a number of votes equal to the number of its members in the U. S. House of Representatives.

A smaller state's votes may be less significant if a new larger one with many more votes comes along. But only a a simple majority vote is required from Congress for statehood so we're back to which party is in power and how many more votes are they going to get.

I wonder if the Puerto Ricans will be required to show I.D. for the next statehood vote? I know that it isn't fair to expect them too. Maybe if Hillary was President it would happen. Well the Democrats would have had to win both houses as well.

Nah, probably isn't going to happen.

I think the number of reps is a set total, which is divied up based on census. We would have to up the number of total reps allowed to just add reps for PR and/or VI without affecting other states. We'd get a guaranteed 1 (+2 Senator votes). But another state would end up losing an EC vote unless we changed the total allowed.

Legalize what you want and tax what you want... they will STILL spend it as fast as its made. IMHO the only way to fix it is get rid of them all and let the feds come in. One they clean house, we need a REASONABLE size government respective for our population.

So apparently the Apportionment Act of 1911 set the number of voting members of the United States House of Representatives at 435 but congress has the authority to change that number. So the several states with only 3 votes would not lose any, one other would lose one based on census. Of course that can happen regardless of adding a new state. But even if only that one state objected to losing a vote/rep it wouldn't by itself impact statehood since only a simple majority congressional approval is required.

Wouldn't that be nice. Maybe. Depends on how well that works out. Kind a like revamping the South after the civil war. Hopefully without the carpetbaggers. I wonder if the resident population would rise up and protest or just be apathetic. I guess it depends on the percentage of the population that really is employed by the gov and would be gone with the cleaning.

But the one thing I keep coming back to, is that if the USVI was perfectly squared away, how many of us would be able to afford to still live here?
More and more people would want to move down. The population would explode. The open land would be gone. Prices of everything would slyrocket, and the "vibe" would quickly disappear.
So...
Improved economic change may not be for the better over the long haul.
Perhaps it's best that things remain as they are?
