A slightly strange question

One of the more unusual things about our last trip to STX was listening to the radio -- a station we really liked -- and having the music suddenly interrupted by an Islamic lecture. It wasn't during late night "off hours." After about 10 minutes, and more than one disturbing reference to "kaffir," we changed the station. (Yes, I know what "kaffir" means, and it's not just "unbeliever." ). It continues to bother me, just as a religious lecture from any other ideology suddenly appearing on commercial music radio would. Should we expect this as a matter of course in STX? I like the freewheeling feel of the island, but if there's a lot of religious aggression, then I'm a little concerned.

Have no idea what you heard. I've been here for 8 years and this has never happened to me. What station? It is possible that what you heard was a paid program that started late, hence the music. Or maybe bleed thru from another station. There are lots of religious stations here.

Hadn't thought about bleed-through, that might have been it. It was Isle 95 in August. We listened to it all the time because the DJ's are so funny and smart.

strange that would be your first question to the board.......just change the radio station if it's not to your liking, no one is forcing you to listen #ImJustSaying

Yeesh. I did turn the station,as I pointed out. I'm very much a live-and-let-live type, and was simply kind of surprised and wondered if I'd missed something. If it had been a commercial broadcast suddenly interrupted by a evangelical Christian lecture about gay people, I'd have been just as confused. Apparently, my bad.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Isle 95 like many of the mainstream radio stations on StX is owned by Jonathan Cohen (hence WJKC) who i believe is Jewish. There is a fair amount of bleed over from some of the smaller stations so NPR gets walked over by a screaming Puerto Rican stn occasionally.

There are many Muslims here. Most of the gas stations and convenience and grocery and furniture stores are Muslim-owned. If that bothers anyone then I don't recommend moving here. This is a very diverse island of which Muslims are only one part. Tolerance is the key to paradise.

I see no problem with the original question...I'd be curious if I was listening to Mongoose and something interrupted the music for 10 minutes.

Ok, now for a (probably) really dumb question: Would a very strong ham radio 'bleed' over into a regular radio station? I'm just curious. Maybe someone was talking to someone else on another island and the signal was accidently hijacked? Is this even possible?

Just want to make myself really clear here. When I said "religious aggression," I meant ALL of them. I am more than tired of getting bombarded with hysteria over Christmas versus "holidays," frantic fulminations about the "gay lifestyle" and "Feminazis" and "purity rings" and why Obama didn't mention God in his Thanksgiving speech, with everybody thumping on their own holy book. It was a surprising and disturbing event that day because I'm absolutely fed up with the whole thing, would like everyone to mind their own business, be nice to their neighbors, and not call each other names, and wanted to know if this was a weird one-off situation or not.

Maybe they were practicing to take over the radio stations on the day that their cells become active? I have never heard anything different like that on any station.

For your information, there is a very large Christian population on the islands. So when you go to people's offices, you are more likely going to see photocopies of Bible verses, poems/saying abouts about Jesus/God, and a sometimes a Bible on their desk once in awhile. These are on workers desks in the hospital, govt. offices , etc.

When you go shopping in privately Eastern Indian owned stores (usually jewelry), you will see Hindu statues, etc, if you look around in the store good enough.

A couple radio stations, broadcast Christian sermons on Sunday. When during the week they are playing reggae, hip-hop, R&B, dancehall.

I don't know anything about that Islamic/Muslim message. I don't listen to that radio station on a regular basis.

Many of the Arabs subscribe to an Arab cable package. Tons of Arab channels with no English speaking channels. Might find one (from England, I think) in the whole channel line-up, aside from paid programming. My understanding most Arabs on island are from Palestine. Correct me if I'm wrong.

😀
"I agree and that is why I made my comment. I have a chance to possibly move down there in the future with a good possibility, but if "JIHAD" is on the thoughts of everyone down there I think I will just stick my ground in the mainland.
"
...does the name Timothy McVeigh mean anything to you? How about Murrah Federal Building, Oklahoma City, OK? Did Timothy's actions constitute "JIHAD", or is that term reserved for dark-skinned people...how about the guy who flew his private plane into a tax office...was he a "jihadist" or just a pissed-off white guy?

Right now, the predominant thing "on the thoughts of everyone" here in the USVI is the cost of energy ( LEAC). You mainlanders watch entirely too much television. There are no terrorists in America. Remember back when a couple of guys with one rifle and a car with a hole in the trunk to shoot through practically shut down DC and the surrounding areas? Imagine what a real, dedicated terrorist could do, especially with rifles commercially available that can shoot over a mile. Stop paying attention to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

Al Jazeera provides native language broadcasts for Arabic-speaking people. There is also an English version available, and you can visit the website here: http://www.aljazeera.com/

Al Jazeera is owned by the state of Qatar, a US-friendly country which provided assistance to NATO during the recent Libya campaign. Most of the journalists at Al Jazeera are formerly of the BBC.

I'm never sure about language. I have close friend who is Persian (he prefers that designation to Iranian) and he speaks Farsi. I assume Plaistinians speak - arab?? Or are there many variations in language?

Palestinians are Arabs; they generally speak a dialect of Arabic.

Post 911, Homeland Security received intelligence on a suspected terrorist sleeper cell in the USVI. After a short investigation, the feds easily located suspected terrorists: Bin Limin and Bin Drinkin. Ten years and thousands of man hours later, the thrid member, Bin Workin is still at large.

All joking aside, the USVI middle eastern population are hard working and contribute positively to the community. With all the true crazy crime in the VI are you really afraid of radio terrorists? Or do people of color and non-western religions scare you?

😀 I love your response.....lol

and to answer the op question, I know exactly what you're talking about and it's not anything new. I have no problem with it and it's of no concern to me. I just change the radio station when it comes on.

Sincerely,
Cruz Bin Yah 😉

P.S. I promise that I'm not a terrorist or belong to a sleeper cell. I just like to sleep a lot. 😀
