Interesting DPNR news and website to development --if you think Njeltberg was contentious.

Not that I agree at all with this development but is their ANY development you would favor?

I think that the Walgreens, Magaritaville, AYH,Yacht Haven, Havensight road, Crown Bay, even Frenchmans Cove are more in line with development needs then taking over the few pristine beaches and losing what is left of our natural beauty.

67% of children receive SNAP benefits, 31% live below poverty line. There has to be a happy medium of jobs and protecting environment. No offense but a turtle isn't putting food on the table, paying WAPA bills or rent.

Turtles are HUGE tourist draws in many destinations and generate lots of jobs. Photos get posted and shared.

The cruise ships have strict requirements before they offer your place of business. They could care less about natural environments and in some ways contribute to development that locals would oppose.

The current beaches with amenities are getting overcrowded, so if we want to maintain the visitors we have, we have to have amenities at a few more beaches, IMO.

Hopefully Margaritaville will be accessible to visitors and locals to give another choice.

And that's all happening with all the development we have had and is in the works. Those new jobs aren't going to change anything especially with high paying ones going to off islanders and transplants, just as yours did.
Once an endangered species is gone, it's gone forever.

If we had an effective government entity in place in the VI over the last few decades, things might be different but I might as well wish to see unicorns.

Obviously, some things need protecting as our government is all too ready to sell out to any bidder and you can use the Mandahl Bay and Summer's End Marina projects as prime examples, permitted by CZM.

I would like to first say 1. My job is hardly high paying and 2. There is not a school here producing students majoring in my field. Some jobs have to look outside but any development should have provisions for hiring people who already reside there

Did Mandahl even get to CZM? Pretty sure it was abandoned before it even got that far.

Some more info concerning the article from someone kind of in the know (me): The owner was not really about having road access, but the truth is many weekdays there are very few people (customers) coming to support it, so for the summer they are opening the road so the staff can pay their bills. I don't know if that is temporary or not.

They care A LOT about sea turtles. When mama came and started to build a nest they cordoned off 1/3 of their prime beach for her nest immediately and without hesitation, then notified authorities to make sure they were doing everything properly.

It's good there's an investigation, as everything needs to be properly permitted and approved, but knowing the people in charge and with ownership I can say with certainty they do indeed care about environmental impact, and are not just out to make a buck consequences be damned.

Hopefully they can make it work financially and ecologically. Our beaches are so small compared to other destinations, that we need to get people to more beaches than Coki, Magens , Sapphire, Smith Bay Park, and Emerald.

Hope they bring the Sunday boat back. I want to go by boat so I can pretend I'm in BVI.

http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/turtles/loggerhead.htm

Bottom line is for any nesting area is that it remains undisturbed and undisclosed. The babies when they hatch go to the light of the stars and ocean. If there is any light behind, they'll never make it as they go for the light. They have enuff challenges that that majority never make it to adulthood.

Which is why this should never have been permitted to begin with considering they are an endangered species.

Granted you friends may care but more traffic whether from boats or cars, run off silt deposits, noise, lights, drunken idiots, etc. are not conducive.

They exceeded their permit regulations.
I have no sympathy for them.
I do for the nesting turtles.
Oh yeah, just what we need, another f..ing bar on the beach!:-X
