Advice needed for young couple moving to STT

We'll be two fresh college graduates in May (Advertising & Psychology), and we're looking to relocate to STT in mid august. I have poured over every resource I can, and there are some things that I can't find in the forums.

For one, are there any neighborhoods that we should try to avoid, or do you have any suggestions? Our budget is $1500 a month, and we're ok with a studio removed link We do have two dogs that are under 30lb.

Secondly, we were wondering about the marinas there, and how much slip rental costs for a boat around 25ft.

Third, if we are leaving in August, when would be a good time to start applying to jobs? Do companies in the VI not hire if it will take us a couple months before we can start working from when we applied. My girlfriend is looking to work for the government in mental health, and sales for me.

I know this is a lot to ask, but I would appreciate feedback.

Hey man,

My wife and I are in a similar position. We have recently been doing research/been very interested in the prospect of moving to the USVI. I am interested in getting this thread going! We are a little older than you. I am 39; she is 40. I have worked in the federal government for 10 years. She works in the restaurant industry. We would both need jobs and would need to secure an apartment. So, basically, starting from scratch! We are newly weds, and we are sick of the cold! We are hard working and our needs are very simple. We have no children. We have a 14 year old schnauzer who we adore.  I welcome any and all words of wisdom to the islanders out there who were young and dreaming of island life...and made it come true!

Welcome to you both. Re: jobs...it is difficult to be hired from off island unless you have some very needed skill. Physicians, nurses, and teachers come to mind. That means that you need to be ready for an extended period of unemployment when you arrive. Typically, we have always said to have 3-6 months of money available. Government jobs are difficult to come by, again unless it a a special area of expertise.

c.yorkd- Have you been to St Thomas? Because it is difficult to explain neighborhoods here. There is much more heterogeneity than stateside. Everyone has their favorite area, and once you arrive, look around, find work, etc. it will make sense. Most of the boat yards are on the south and east end. Dock space is by the foot, but I can't tell you the current rates.

cozcap- Would you still work for the federal government? That would make things much easier. Restaurant jobs are always out there.

To both of you, after big storms there are lots of people who leave and lots who come in. We are still in the middle of that upheaval. Good luck to you!

1.  There are definitely bad areas on both STT and STX.  Best to do a PMV and see for yourself.

2.  Just call the marinas and ask.

3.  Start applying right away.  Competition is fierce.  Lots of people are in your shoes and island companies are used to it.

EastEnder, my apologies for not seeing your response sooner. Thank you for your suggestions. Thank you NugBlazer, too. To answer your question, EastEnder:  it would be ideal to stay with my agency; however, there are no openings in the VI at this time.  I am keeping all options open. I am not above any work that will put food on the table. We will be taking a short trip to STT in March. I am doing as much networking as I can from here (sending out resumes, emails, and applications) but definitely reading/understanding that it is better to physically be there and talk to folks! So, we are going to make that happen in a month or so 🙂
