Two threads have been deleted. Poof, gone in the last 24 hours that mentioned atheism. There was nothing bad at all in them and fact I got a welcome from a fellow atheist and in land where it is quite religious it was very nice to know I was not alone.

Both threads mentioned atheism and both threads were deleted. I have seen no other threads deleted in my short time here so I can only asume that the moderators are uber religious and delete anything that lists anything about atheism or nonbelief.

It's quite upsetting and certainly makes me think again about moving to a place that is not very accepting. Can someone please explain?

I'll know the truth if this thread disapears.

I'm not sure what happened. There are some uber religous folks on the isalnd of all sorts of different religions. Also lots of nonreligious folks. A very good mix of people. One of the things I enjoy most about the island is the rich diversity of people and culture.

it could be the threads were taking down because it quickly turned into a personal attack thread. a good debate does not turn into name calling and those threads usually do.

It's simple if you read the guidelines of the board. Off- topic and negative posts provoking argument (paraphrasing) will be deleted. This is about relocating and living in the U.S.V.I., and not any other Caribbean place, for that matter. If someone wants to be a ChattyCathy about anything and everything, I'm sure there are other places. I personally don't want to read about a person's anti-religious thoughts on this board, and same goes for the reverse, I'm sure.

Both the threads were off topic but both didn't really have a topic to begin with and I only chimed in when someone was talking about "God" the the pledge of allegience. It was all super civil and not negative at all. Then poof it was gone.

Then the next thread was asking what happened to the first thread. That one was kind of negative because one member was saying that another member was trying to recruit atheists or something and I was a bit offended. I had just posted that there was no recruiting and it was nice to know I wasn't alone. And one woman welcommed me as a fellow atheist so I felt better but then again poof it was gone.

Well I am glad to know that it is allowed and this thread was here when I woke up.

If you don't want to read about it then skip the thread. There is no difference in asking where to find a catholic church, Buddhist temple or gathering for atheists. They all apply for people considering a move to help find other like minded people. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it wrong.

I'd rather see open communication where people can have a discussion than censored topics. I do believe the other topics were removed due to personal attacks and inappropriate language and not due to the atheist topic. It's too bad people can't help but stoop to name calling and insults.

Thanks divinggirl. Yeah maybe they got nasty after I posted and then were deleted and I didn't see the nastiness. I was thinking it was due to the topic. So that is good to know and this is still here.

Yeah I do agree with your post above. I moved to religious Puerto Rico after being born and raised in secular San Francisco. I wasn't an atheist in San Francisco. I was just non religious. It was a non issue. Then I came to Puerto Rico and it is in your face every moment. I know it is harmless but I don't want every person, including a grocery store clerk to bless me. Or my professors to say God is looking out for me. Puerto Rico turned me from a non religous person to an atheist. So knowing there are others on the island that can relate does help when deciding to make a move.

I hate to rain on your parade, but religion might not be shoved down your throat or in your face as you explained it in PR. But a lot of workers at RLS hospital have bible scriptures and/or prayers posted around their work areas where you can see them in plain view and some even have the Bible on their desk. They also wear religious jewelry to work.
It is not just at the hospital, but at govt. offices and private businesses also.

That is my observation.

I do not discuss religion or politics on this board. So, I sign off from this thread.

If you're that susceptible, who knows what you might turn into here - the possibilities are endless!

I became an atheist/agnostic in college. I took a comparative religion course and it started me thinking. Thinking is a bad thing for religion unless you limit yourself only to the teachings of your religion. The one true one of course!

Someone on here recently threw Pascal's Wager at me. If I am wrong and believe in god then it's just a small mistake, but if you are wrong and don't believe in god then eternal hell! This sounds like an easy bet but Voltaire disproved this 300 years ago.

When you learn about the many gods that man has worshipped over time you have to ask yourself how can you be sure. I was raised Baptist and had many many questions. I have never had a religious hallucination, talked to god, witnessed a true miracle or any of the other things that convince people to believe. And just because I was born in the Southern US in the middle of the bible belt was not enough reason to turn off my skeptical mind. Give me evidence over mythology any day.

Science is the way to approach the big questions. Yes, evolution is a theory, that's the way science works. We observe the data, we form a hypothesis, we develop experiments to test our theory, then we publish our results for peer review and input. Our knowledge is constantly being refined.

Religion is a bad way to approach the big questions. It relies on ancient documents whose origin is questionable. No evidence is provided. The holy book says it is true so it is true! Enough said.

Religion does not hold any answers, it just stops you from asking the questions.
Keep asking questions and being skeptical of the answers that you get. We are a young race and still learning.

I became an atheist/agnostic in college ... etc

Now that's an example of what I don't consider relevant to this forum. Interesting, yes, but a subject for a religious debate forum, not one designed specifically to, "Join discussions on moving to and living in the USVI, ask questions, share info & tips!" Next thing you know members of every religious group or life philosophy organization in the VI is going to be adding a post with each noting why they chose their particular path. Gasp! 😀

And why shouldn't every religious group join in? You are not forced to read any of this. Obviously some people are interested.

Why single out this one topic? Swans is always posting NASA information. I love it, but what does it have to do with relocating to the USVI? Have you complained? Many threads on here have nothing to do with relocating to the USVI. This forum is also used by people who live here or are thinking about moving here to get to know each other. You saw that the OP felt better about knowing that they would have other people around who shared their values.

Chill out! Participate in the discussion or don't, I don't care. The OP did just what you suggested to me, they started their own thread to discuss this topic and yet you still complain. Never Happy until you silence the discussion.

This atheism thread seems destined for deletion. It's going the same way as all the others.

I agree Bob. Why can't the theists just leave us atheists alone to discuss this topic among ourselves? If you do not feel the topic is relevent then don't discuss it.

Are they really that afraid that any discussion about this topic must be shouted down?

I just was not used to it "in my face" all the time but what helped was when I found out I wasn't the only non religious person on an island of 4 million. I totally get that a lot of it is cultural but to have a group of like minds that I can bouce things off totally helped.

I very much enjoy Swan's posts about what there is to see in our night skies and find the information very relevant to living here in the VI.

And yet you don't find atheism relevent to the atheists living here.

The diversity of the islands is one of its attractions. I want everyone who considers living here to know that athiests are just as welcome as jews, christians, hindus, muslims, buddhists, taoists, confucianists, etc.
