Hi,

I am getting conflicting information about which airlines will fly larger dogs to Saint Croix. First American Airlines said they would but five minutes later they said they would only transport them as far as Saint Thomas.

She's currently in the D.C. Area. Any suggestions as to how I can get her here would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Aida's Mom

STX or not, this time of year a dog can not fly in cargo. Should not matter STT or STX as long as it's not an Airbus for cargo and as far as I know AA only flies 737s to STX.
Speak to a different agent. Don't think 45lb dog will fit under the seat in cabin. There are several other recent threads on the forum discussing pet travel including one that discusses a charter airline specializing in this.

The bag and pet/dog combined cannot weigh more than 20 lbs to go under the seat on American. The pet/dog must be able to stand up and turn around in bag as well. They will weigh your pet and bag prior to boarding in Miami.

An alternative is a kennel and air freight service out of Fort Lauderdale that ships pets overnight into the Caribbean to avoid the heat of the day. They ship flat faced dogs that American bans in cargo.

Delta can get your dog as far as San Juan. They have service from ATL to STX but they fly an Airbus on that route. From SJU, you can catch a local flight or charter.

Delta will not accept pets as checked baggage any more. AA flies a 737 for MIA daily and an airbus A320 from Charlotte on Saturdays.

I spoke with American Airlines yesterday and they will transport dogs, but they must be under 20 pounds to be onflight. And no, you can't buy an additional seat for them (I asked). Here is a link to their pet policy. Hope this helps!

Hello Gator's Mom,

By any chance do you recall the name of the company out of Fort Lauderdale?

Thank you all for the info. I am checking into all the possibilities. Her size is an issue as well as the temperature and flight connections. If I find a good solution I will post.

Out of couriousity, has anyone traveled with a dog on one of the cargo freighters (ships)?

Thanks again,

Aida's Mom

I don't think I'd subject myself or my dog to a cargo freighter.
She may have to wait until cooler weather to move with dog in cargo unless she can afford the cost of a private flight shared with others that are looking to transport their animals at the same time.

I used American Airlines to get my 65 lb. dog from STT to FL.
Although I'd have preferred flying into Orlando which was closer to my destination, I had to fly into Tampa as American only had AIRBUS planes flying between Miami and Orlando.

Airlines don't reserve space in cargo for dogs. It's strictly first come, first served basis and they have a limit on how many dogs that they allow on any flight. Get there early.

Don't book ticket online. You need to discuss with airline agent.

Peace of Mind Pet Shipping out of Fort Lauderdale FL.

(954) 491-8189 - Email - jrusso2384@aol.com

I know someone who just used this service for 2 lg dogs just a few wks ago.

Cost $1700 for both dogs. (do not know if that $ included the kennels)

They fly your pets at night to avoid heat restrictions

Pets arrived in STX alive and well.

All is NOT lost if you can only get to STT
The ferry between STX & STT also will allow pets. Must be in a kennel and the cost a small flat rate up to 50LBS, then they chrg per lb after. It wasn't much if I remember correctly. Best way to reach them is via TXT @ 340-473-1322

Best of luck to you and your Fur-baby.

We always used AA for our 55 lb lab Denver-Miami-St Croix
She flew in a kennel in baggage and AA charged us $175 each way
AA does have temp restrictions so check those out and pick the shortest flight times so the dog does not have to spend any more time than necessary in the plane.
Also prepare to go thru TSA with the dog.
They will have to check the kennel and the dog before they load your pet on the plane.
So get to the airport at least 2 hours early.
Flying with a large pet will test your patience
