On STX your best bet is finding a GP to prescribe you meds. Bring copies of the entire medical history, though.

If you're looking for therapy- this isn't the place. There are a couple of psychologists on-island, but they are pretty busy. The same with psychiatrists, there are essentially none- unless you are needing urgent medical care or under some hospital or government program (rehab, hospice).

There is a psychologist with the first name Spencer, last name is escaping me at the moment. He can't prescribe meds, but I met with him once and he seemed genuinely interested and helpful.

There are one or two psychiatrists connected with the hospital (who go between STT and STX)- I couldn't get in, but you may have better luck.

For what its worth, I have adult ADHD and control it with Adderall. My GP prescribed it after I showed him my long-term medical file documenting my past dosages, etc. I first tried to find a psychiatrist for my Rx but to no avail.

Derek Spencer, M.D. is a psychiatrist and can prescribe.

You might check the Association of Virgin Islands Psychologists for licensed professionals on both St Thomas and St Croix.

Spencer...absolutely NOT! That is both a personal and professional opinion.
Dr Nigamatov on St Thomas and Dr Neugart on St Croix are both very capable psychiatrists...IF you can get in to see them.
Avoid hospitalization in psych. units in the VI - go to PR or Stateside. They are really just set up for warehousing and stabilization of psychotic street people without means...limited therapy, brusque staff, no medical support. Pretty scary places.
If your wife is less than stable, please reconsider the move...the USVI is no place for anything more than mild psych. needs.

sally's comment about Dr Spencer was an opinion, not a statement about his medical degree. He is a psychiatrist. Dr Lu still sees patients, although he is not a board-certified psychiatrist.

I had forgotten about Dr Nigamatov!

While I can't comment on Dr. Spencer (he isn't the one I was thinking of, but I could have my names mixed up) I do agree with Sally's comment that the USVI is no place for someone who needs any sort of continuing psychiatric care.

But if she is stabilized (and/or on medication) then she should be fine. If she does need continuing or more intensive care than "How are you feeling? Here is your RX" then you're going to have to get a little creative. But hey, that is life in the big city. (Or not, as is the case).

If you get to STT, bring a note from your Stateside doctor, and give it to Dr. Hartschorn at The Paragon Medical Building behind the hospital. His business is called Healthcare Connections, which he shares with Dr. Judith Wheatly, who could also help, I suppose. Dr. Scott Hartschorn will most likely read the note, chat with you for a bit, then continue to prescribe your Effexor XXR, which you can get at any pharmacy. If you do not have health insurance, Dr.'s Choic Pharmacy has a "Rewards" program for the uninsured which helps to reduce the costs.
