I am considering moving to St Croix but my field is in automotive repair. I have been searching for quality repair shops in St Croix on the internet and the only one that seems to have a website is HH auto repair. So I am hoping with this post that there is someone that knows of or uses a high quality repair shop and can let me know how to get in touch with them.

Thank you,
Tim

There are several repair shops. The words "quality auto repair" and "St Croix" are not synonymous in my book. In my several years on island, I've yet to find a single one that is consistently good...and some I refuse to do business with. As I'm not that mechanical, depending on the issue I'll pick the lesser of the evils. Here's a partial list for your benefit (off the top of my head)...

Caribbean Auto Mart
Echo Valley Tire
Metro Motors
MVP? Auto (5 corners)
Unique Auto (Glynn)
Tire Express

There's lots more...just can't think of them now.

I worked in STX as a mechanic. You could actually do side work out of your home. I worked at CAM but was constantly asked to do repairs on the side. You will just have to research and do a PMV. There are a few new car dealers and several small garages.

If you're looking to get screwed by an employer here CAM is a great place to start.

Thank you everyone for the input. I would not be working on cars, only either being a service advisor or manager so it would probably need to be a repair facility that is larger than 5 bays.

Maybe you could do a PMV to see what is available and realistic in your line of work.

... searching for quality repair shops in St Croix on the internet...

Most auto repair shops on island get business through word of mouth so a website is superfluous, kind of like using big words - the irony is stunning. 😎

Thank you some of the input. Buying a place is not an option right now. And from the searching I have done, there are not shops that do much advertising, so it makes them hard to find. Alana, what is PMV stand for? I also been looking in the help ads the last several months and have not seen much either but will keep looking.

PMV = Pre-Move Visit

it's usually 1 week or more, to research whether a new place could be right for you. Treat it more as research, and less as vacation.

There aren't many dealerships in the VI and what there is is probably different from what you are used to in the states and not as large.
The salaries are probably different from what you may be used to.
There are lots of automobile repair shops but not many with numerous bays. Some are great and some not so great.

I have used the same mechanic for 30 years from when he was a shade tree mechanic to owning his present operation with 3 bays here in STT.

Best thing to do is an exploratory visit (PMV) to whichever island you decide upon, check the local phone book, make a list of places that may interest you and make an appointment to visit in person to speak with an owner or manager. You may find what you're looking for. Or you may not.

Here's a link to the VI phone book:

Thank you Bob and Alana. I am hoping to visit there this year and it is a good idea on making the lists. I think before I come down, I will contact some of the shops to see if they are interested in meeting with me and schedule days and times to visit with them.

I am sure salaries are much different but I am prepared for that as I am really interested in moving to St Croix.
