I couldn't see the name - it was too far out and appeared to be passing through on her way down island. i know the boat you're thinking of. Can't think of the name right now. But I don't think this was it. This boat was much bigger. If you can imagine.

now that is hard to imagine. would loved to have seen that one though. hubby gets out the binoculars and checks out the name and then looks them up on line.

Am I missing something, or does this site not track ships at STX?

The site only tracks ships where someone has installed an AIS receiver and fed the data to the site. This is not a government service it is done on a voluntary basis by individuals. The US Coast Guard does have AIS equipment but do not feed their data to this site.

Anyone can set up an AIS receiver. All it takes is a scanner and a computer. The software is available free at http://www.coaa.co.uk/shipplotter.htm .

The same service is available for aircraft. It is called ACARS and there are many free packages for this as well.

I just volunteered with this site to provide AIS data for them! STX is usually a black hole, a few bigger boats (possibly satellite linked?) are shown. I contacted them and they are going to send me a receiver so hopefully more traffic soon come will be shown on their site around us!

Hopefully you are putting it at your office instead of your house. VHF reception depends on having the antenna at a high elevation.

I have an AIS antenna on my roof and I can receive ships all the way from Culebra and Anegada all the way to 50 miles south of STX.

I also have ACARS and can receive planes for hundreds of miles around. As far away as the southern Bahamas.

Didn't get to see it this time but that same yacht was docked in Gallows Bay last year for several days. Owned by a german billionaire who owns a screw manufacturing company. From what I read online, he 'screwed' his employees so as to have the ship built. Don't have the links anymore but you'll find it when you search the yacht name. Very nice ride, indeed...
