Boat registration St Croix

For clarification. I bought the boat in Florida and shipping with VI Cargo. The title is not in my name yet.

You'll need to have the title in your name to register.
Get more than one original title document.
Sometimes multiple government agencies require an original document.

How do I go about getting the title in my name before I can register? I have the title and a bill of sale signed by the seller and myself.
I live in Texas and bought the boat in Florida solely to ship to St Croix. Did not make sense to get a new title in the states before shipping?

I have only rarely seen a trailer with a valid license plate on St. Croix. I have never registered my boat trailer either.

I called DPNR this morning. Was told by I can register boat with signed title transfer and notarized bill of sale.
Also told that I can not get a new title in my name on St Croix. Said I must apply for new title in the state that I purchased the boat in. In my case Florida. This part is really confusing?

Why wouldn't you title the boat in TX where you live?

Good question? But the lady at DPNR was specific in saying that I needed to title the boat in state I bought it. Agree that it doesn't make sense that it would matter which state.

I'll be on St Croix this Thursday to pick up boat from VI Cargo and then getting it registered. I will get clarification on this.

I think what is meant is that you need to change the title over to you in Texas first, then change the title (now in your name) to the VI registration.

Just like the boat. I purchased a car in Florida and shipped it to St Croix. I was able to transfer the car title when I registered it at department of motor vehicles. Did not need to get title in my name in the states first.

Why would a boat be any different? Hopefully, I'll find out more when I go to DPNR to register the boat.

What was the final outcome? I am in the same situation...bought a boat in Maryland, having it shipped down here and need to register it. Did DPNR ever create a title for you? If not, how will you ever sell the boat? What was the registration process? Thanks much.

Boat titles are not issued in the VI. DPNR has an application for you to complete. (sorry I can't find an on-line link that works). Along with the application you submit a notarized proof of ownership. Renewals are annual on July 1.

So, to be absolutely, perfectly clear. When I close on my boat in Maryland, I will get a notarized bill of sale and a title (in original owners name) that has been signed over to me.

All I need is the notarized bill of sale and take it to DPNR, fill out their form, pay their fees, and I will get registration numbers, a sticker, and card?

Then, down the road when I get ready to sell the boat, I just need to provide the new owner with a notarized bill of sale?

I suppose getting the boat documented by the Coast Guard is a good idea and another "proof of ownership"

Incidentally, am I looking at any taxes or fees to bring the boat into the territory?

I suggest documenting the boat. Makes proof of ownership easier though renewing documentation is something else you have to do each year - but you can renew online now. Having the feds involved just makes it seem more official somehow and that notarized bill of sale looks really good in future transactions.

I don't know about taxes owed. I'm sure you'll find out. Are you shipping or sailing the boat? Is it foreign made? Could make a difference. I've never brought a boat into the VI from the states.

I would take the signed/notarized title to DPNR along with the notarized bill of sale - always anticipate bureaucracy. 🙂

I'm driving the boat down from Maryland to Florida, then shipping it here (or to STT); at least that's the plan as of today...the Thorny Path is just too hard on a power boat.

The boat is a Tiara, made in Michigan, so if its anything like a vehicle, I wouldn't expect to pay duty, and certainly not a road tax, but who really knows. Yes, like all things gov't around here, I'll expect a fair amount of bureaucracy.

Not the case for the boat. I had to get the boat title transferred to my name in Texas first. Then was able to register my boat on St Croix. The process is absolutely different for a boat than a car.

No tings easy.
