Hi all. I will be arriving in STX Monday for my PMV and I have a Verizon smart phone. I was told Verizon charges roaming $2 a minute. Any suggestions on how to have a phone for my short stay? Is there any phone rentals? I could buy a go phone with prepaid minutes, and I guess I'd just have to give up my text and email for the week.

Buy a go phone and find wifi for your Internet needs.

WavesNC: See this post about buying a pay-as-you-go phone: https://www.vimovingcenter.com/talk/read.php?4,201154,201349#msg-201349

I'm also sending you a PM (private message).

You're spending a whole week on a pre move visit? You may wish to re think that. If you really can't go without a phone for a whole week. Get a ATT go phone. Or bring an unlocked phone with you and buy a SIM card when you get here.

What exactly is your advice? Visit longer? Shorter? Don't visit at all if you need a phone?

I'm not sure what that means? In regard to rethinking the PMV or the relocation and why?
I have no problems going weeks without technology, but when I'm visiting here, I will have to keep appointments with all the places and people that I plan to visit. I would think it rude if I had a two o'clock meeting somewhere and didn't phone if is was unable to keep it.

A PMV means you're contemplating a move but, you're coming down to evaluate the life style, cost of living, tolerance for island time etc.
In your original post you implied you're going to do that in a weeks time. You will need way more than that to figure out if island life is going to be a good fit for you. You need to go to banks, post office, food stores etc. In other words, you need to "live" here for a while to experience it all. It's not paradise and it can be quite challenging to live here.
You registerd here just 10 days ago. That's not even enough time to research this forum.
As far as you cell phone, Verizon does not provide service here. Good luck getting out of your contract with those idiots should you decide to make the move.

well then. most people recommend a longer PMV to see if this is a good fit. They also recommend that you try not to be too touristy. My hubby came down, i visited for a week about a year before i moved here. i kinda had to move. it is a beautiful place. a lot of things to frustrate a person if you are not patient. thats pretty much what he means by visiting all of the places people deal with on a daily basis. check out prices see what the availability is like, that kind of thing.
but really, you can never get a true idea of what it is like to live here until you actually do.

have a good time on your pmv

Does AT&T provide service there?

Yes. There's no roaming charges and if you transfer your account and change your number, your plan is the same as in the states. I actually get better service (signal) here than when I lived in the states also.

Definitely stay shorter. Leave your phone and stuff at home. If you stay longer just buy alot of string and 2 coconut halves.:S

Thanks for clarifying. I appreciate everyones input here, and in no way meant to offend (if I did?).
I've been perusing the forum for awhile, but I did just recently register in order to post.
I've done some extended stays on islands before, but never in the USVI. I've been caught in island politics last year when the firefighters went on strike in the Turks and Caicos and delayed my departure for days. I have an inkling of island life, but not STX island life, so I definitely will be evaluating a lot of places. The length of this visit was determined by my possible future employer, who made the flight arrangements.

No offense taken. Some people have vacationed here for a week, stayed at a nice comfy resort and decide from their experience here that it will be a good place to live. A few months and 10k dollars later, they move back to wherever they came from. The "honeymoon phase" wears off and reality hits.
