There was a story circulating in town a few years ago about a tourist who said the black chickens are prized somewhere so he took some back when he left.

I guess I'll Google Julie's chickens to see which ones she has.

I would question this story because I don't know of anyone who would be willing to go through the process of bring in undocumented birds or animals into any country because the process is long and tiring. It's a real pain just to travel with a pet bird back and forth from the States to the Islands. It's no where as easy as traveling with cats or dogs.

I assume taking my mongoose with me anywhere is probably not going to happen either... I hear these things live to 20+ in captivity....

I wouldn't question it where fowl are concerned. I too saw two boxes of squawking crowing chickens being accepted for shipping Priority Mail to the States at the PO last week!

MDM - Maybe he just mailed them... doesn't seem to be strict regulations concerning mailing roosters thru the post office from
what I've observed which completely boggles my mind.
Whether they survive is unknown.

I know you have parrots which would be considered "exotic" as far as Ag. Dept. is concerned with regard to importing/exporting them.

LF - time for you to post another video of your mongoose!
What did you name him? You've got a lifetime buddy there unless you acclimate him to outdoors and the wild to be able to fend for himself.

I didn't notice anyone submitting a health certificate when mailing off his rooster in a very small box.
IMO, this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen and shouldn't be allowed.

Maybe read and learn some more. The fact that you didn't personally "see" anyone submitting the required documentation means zilch. If you were that concerned about procedures why didn't you march up to the counter and (of course knowing the restrictions/laws) demand to see compliance with USPS/Federal laws?

Get real, OT. This is the VI.
I did ask about when it was my turn because I was quite surprised it was allowed.

busy busy... those videos (or my own indecisiveness) take ridiculous amounts of time to edit and put together.. took me around 6+ hours to finish the last one not counting shooting the video etc...

hard to justify that much time in front of the computer when I have so many other irons in the fire.

he already bosses my dogs and cats around.. I bet he'd do pretty well outdoors, they are so fast (can run up to 37mph according to the internet, I believe it).

CHICKEN RELOCATION UPDATE:
Successful, I still only have 1 rooster in my area... PRO TIP: dog food works for attracting them & a pool net works great for capture (if you have good aim) otherwise just wait untill they are about to roost for the night (dusk) and grab them as they go to tree (its rather easy).

If it's a Ayam Cemani, one would go thru the hoops to do so. It's a rare breed. They are all black, including the meat and sell for $2500 per bird! Baby chicks sell for $200 each. I know someone who breeds them and has spent thousands of dollars and did a crazy amounts of paperwork to have them shipped from overseas.

Here's a link about them:

I saw this show on TV once....

I watched a show recently on History Channel. "Modern Marvels: Eggs". It is excellent! It may not necessarily be the one you wrote about, but it was extremely enlightening.

From the site eater.com.

Martha Stewart on her first big dinner party: There was one party in New York for the Folk Art Museum... I brought in the food and decorations. That armory is a giant place, and they allowed me to bring in my beautiful chickens — a rare breed. I brought them in poultry cages and people were shocked to see real chickens alive and well. I brought in giant baskets of apples and bales of hay — brought in the harvest, basically. This is at the same time, by the way, that Studio 54 is doing walls of ice and all kinds of crazy stuff. People went nuts over that. They loved it. They wanted the country brought to the city and the city brought to the country."

Please come to STX to trap some of our chickens! We have too many.

I have my own trap.
If dry dog food and cat food doesn't work, try the wet.
It's completely irresistible to even the most trap shy.

I called the Ag. Vet (amongst others) and talked them into accepting, any feral fowl that I trapped, at Ag Station in Dorothea.
I do have a farmer that I normally hand them off to.
It's been a long time since I've had to use trial for feral fowl.
Now, it's stray cats. I trap, spay/neuter and release and continue to feed. Some stay, some move on but none will be producing more kittens in the bush.

Thanks to Lucky Paws for low cost S/N.

STT wins for # of chickens BY FAR. Theres al lot here but not nearly as many. STT is insane especially around the dumpsters. Tourists always asked me how the chickens got here.... I always said the tunnel from MIA as thats usually about the time as they ask "do you live here?" MAN I miss that job! It was SO entertaining! :@):@)

Ha!
For $375 they can immortalize all they want.
Never going to be on my wall!

For those of you that may be unaware, roosters don't crow just at dawn. They start at 3 -4 AM and continue (on and on and on,in some cases) thruout the day.

Also, there is considerable variation in the crowing intonation. Additionally, when there is more than one rooster, they start crowing in a particular order, according to their social rank, with the dominant rooster starting first. I've become somewhat of a rooster whisperer during my stay in STX.
