ST. THOMAS - The 31st annual Texas Society of the Virgin Islands Chili Cook-Off will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Brewers Beach on St. Thomas.

Chili will be available for the public after the noon opening ceremony at two tastes for $1, and hot dogs will be cooked by the team from Banco Popular.

The event will open with the combined members of the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School Burning Blazers and V.I. Superior Court Rising Stars steel pan bands performing the National Anthem and V.I. March as members of the U.S. Marine Corps present the colors.

Live music will feature local bands Why Not and Rum Syndicate, and Webb Fingers will play in between sets. Music will continue throughout the afternoon until the 4 p.m. announcement of winners.

For those who don't want to wait for the music to start at 11 a.m., returning this year will be the Hot Chili Run sponsored by Active Island Tours. The 2-mile run/walk will start at 9 a.m. at the UVI Fitness Center and end at Brewers Beach. Registration for the run is $35. Contact www.activeislandvi.com for details.

All proceeds from the event are donated to Dial-A-Ride, Family Resource Center, Queen Louise Home for the Aged and other local nonprofit organizations. In addition, two $1,000 scholarships to UVI are awarded to local students, one from Charlotte Amalie High School and one from Ivanna Eudora Kean High School.

Paid parking will be available at the Reichhold Center lot with proceeds benefiting the St. Thomas Sail and Power Squadron.

The contest

A Chili Appreciation Society International sanctioned chili competition will be held for beef chili and a local competition will be held for vegetarian chili. Awards will be given to the top 10 beef chilis, top three vegetarian chilis, top three small showmanship and top three large showmanship teams. More than $30,000 in prizes has been donated by local businesses. The top local winner will have the option to represent the Virgin Islands at the national cook-off in Terlingua, Texas, with paid airfare, hotel, fuel and RV rental.

More than 6,000 attendees are expected this weekend.

I guess that projected 6K attendance will be falling very short since the drought broke today - such a shame. What a lot of weather ...

Actually, I was down there earlier as had to drop off something for one of the entrants. Lots of people there at 10:30. I mentioned the
6K # that I read in article and friend said that was an exaggerated expected amount. Usually, 3K, tops. Still a lot of people for an event.
However, at least, they're not having to tear everything down like the year we had the tropical storm come in and blow like hell and run everyone off the beach and had to break everything down before the storm hit. Feel bad they probably won't have as many as they would on a lovely, sun shining day but I am extremely grateful for the rain we're getting today. Something substantial, at last!

Hope you're getting some too, STX!
