I was reading the VIC about a recent shooting on STX. The article was referencing the "cockpit". At times I saw it in caps and others in lower case. I originally thought that it was the name of a bar or nightclub............

So, cockfighting is legal in the VI?
What about dog fighting?

Like a lot of things in the VI, not legal but they exist due to a lack of will to enforce the law.

technically both are illegal.

Federal law still applies here (or is suppose to).

Only federal laws that are applicable to the Territories. The cockfighting law isn't.

Its technically been Federally illegal since 1979, however in 2014 the 15th adjustment to animal cruelty prevention passed.

Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act.

And this one is actually netting prosecution, unlike the previous laws.

https://www.pressreader.com/usa/san-francisco-chronicle/20160824/282222305175216

"State governments and Congress are entitled to classify cockfighting as a crime, though it is legal in U.S. territories such as Guam, the Northern Marianas, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, Judge John Owens said in the appeals court's 3-0 ruling."

One of many examples. Google is your friend.

These businesses pay $50 for a cockfighting license at DLCA.
It's a travesty.

Only a misdemeanor in south Carolina. tried to raise to a felony a few years ago when a prominent state legislator was involved with a few fights.
