Cost and availability of seafood

Hi all,

From what I've read so far, the cost of living in the V.I. is about 1/3 to 2/3 higher than on the mainland. I've read some older posts on the forum indicating that the cost of seafood on the other hand is quite low, and it is plentiful. Is that still the case? I'm referring to market / grocery / roadside stand prices of seafood, not restaurant prices. Any examples of prices would be a bonus!

Thanks,
Ted

I have purchased live lobster (warm water), fresh caught that morning from the side of the road for $5-7 lb.

I've heard tell it's pretty easy to get a case of crabs in St. Thomas?
Or maybe I just didn't understand the person correctly - silly me.

I heard the same thing about the USVI. In Puerto Rico it is hard to get good fresh cheap fish and it is also surrounded by water. People don't eat fish here. They eat fried stuff. Ugh!

When you say "seafood", what do you mean? Local fish are fish caught in fishpots and served whole. Many are very bony and difficult to eat, IMHO. Sportfishing fish like tuna, wahoo and mahi are also available, although they seem to sell most of that to the restaurants. Seafood in the markets are frozen and flown in. If you were thinking about things like shrimp or oysters, they aren't local. Sometimes you can get whelks, landcrabs and other interesting items.

The story I overheard about fish food poisoning yesterday from eating red snapper was sad, but yet so funny as the West Indian man was telling his experience of it on his cell phone. He was very detailed and I mean very detailed of a bad case of it. I would never want to get by the way he explained it!
