A lot of the roadside sellers get their produce from Dominican Republic, at least here in STT, I've noticed.
The prices aren't cheap, anywhere you go.

A STX farmer friend says a good rule of thumb is any stand on the south side of Centerline is not selling local. Same with anyone selling out of a truck on the roadside at the farmers market.

Best bet is to buy from directly from farmers like G&G, ART Farm, and Ridge to Reef and others. But not cheap.

Hmmm I find this one about butter hard to believe. Butter is $5 a pound stateside. Or do you mean margarine.

It's about that at CUL - the higher price.
Cheapest milk I've found Is at Pricesmart for milk - $3.99 a 1/2 gallon.

Butter. I couldn't believe it either, but it was marked that price and scanned at that price. Sometimes you get lucky!

Considering the wholesale price of butter is $3, I wouldn't have bought it (personal opinion). You gotta wonder why they're trying to unload it that cheap.

Correct, hence why I questioned ms411 posting $2/lb.

I've eaten half of the pound already and still standing. I figure they made a mistake in pricing which I see from time to time.

Yes, they do make pricing mistakes in favor of the consumer.
I would've stocked up on said butter. Butter freezes well.

Stateside prices at this time:
•Half a gallon of 2% milk ~ 1.97
•Dozen large white eggs ~ 1.47
•Niagara 32 pk purified water ~ 3.50. The on sale price in Stt Kmart is 2 for 10.00 and usually sells out.
•Bananas ~ 29 cents/lb. Lowest price I bought.

You can look up a couple store sale circulars online that you usually shop at and compare prices when on island.
Walgreens & Kmart are two stores on Stt you can compare prices.
Kmart sales start on Friday.
No circular for Walgreens tho, but can still use circular for comparison.

Plaza Extra and Pueblo are online also. You can check out their sale prices, which start on Wednesday.

Sometimes bananas are free. Sometimes avocados are free. In July mangoes are often free. Quite a few items are free depending on who you know. I doubt many people in the States get free bananas and star fruit.

Mmmmmm, can't wait for mango season.

Funny thing is mangoes are pretty much $ ea most of the year back in the local store in NC when they are double that at Plaza. Coming from S. America during winter season.

Unrealistic, at least on STX, to think that all or even several of these will grow in your yard at once in any reasonable quantity, especially without basic horticultural care at the least. Most of those fruits do not grow in all areas on STX. Lower Love is closest to being able to grow at least several of those named fruits at once. Most all require more than simply planting a tree and willing it to grow.

Out East, almost no fruits grow. I am a realist about these things as this is one reason my spouse and I originally chose to move to STX, and we have been sorely disappointed. However most of these fruits can be purchased at the farmers markets. We have attempted mango, avocado, sugar apple to grow many times at our home and always they have died. Coconut palm has done ok.

Not to mention the last two years when our banana trees have been full of fruit and we have been eagerly awaiting our homegrown bananas someone has come into our yard in the middle of the night and stolen them all. Yes we are bitter. Yes we are considering a move back to the states after our years here.

That is true. Nothing like STT when it comes to fruit trees. Heck I've only seen a few avocado trees here. In STT I would only rent a place that had an avocado tree lol. Our first rental had all that Alana mentioned - plus my 70 a year avo.

Sad the thieving on fruit and veggies. I heard R2R has the same problem. They go to harvest and de gan. Ridiculous.

Finatic have you considered STT? I sent you a pm.

I've had people pull in my driveway and when I call out to ask what they want, they tell me they stop to pick the fruit.
I tell them to get the hell off my property or I gonna loose de dogs.
They do.

A guy lives down the hill, drives a taxi, pulls into my lower driveway
by my prolific cashew trees, bag in hand. My truck is there so he must know I'm home, doesn't come to door or ask permission and proceeds to pick fruit. I tell him to get off property and leave the fruit that he's picked behind. He does.

He tries same thing with neighbors mango tree but brings a fruit picker and a bag. She's chases him off as well. If he'd asked, first,
he might have gotten better results.

Saw 2 young boys walking towards my road on way home.
I thought, "fruit tiefs!" They surprised me.
They knocked on the door and politely asked if they could take some mangoes. I gave them each a bag and told them they could have as many as they wished.

We are lucky to harvest a handful of mangoes from our tree in St. Pete. The fruit literally disappear over night - year after year. Before disease killed our key limes, I would go to work and come back and have my trees picked clean. I figure the pickers have greater need than we do - but it does get tiresome. Not just a VI problem.
