An idiot must have compiled this list. I have been coming to U. S. Virgin Islands since 1990 & lived here for 7 years (2005-2012). Never have I felt in danger.

Yep a Sh!t article. No depth and most likely just getting clicks for ad revenue.

Although I did feel slightly threatened in Fredericksted one night. Was walking back to my vehicle from a night dive and was walking from the sidewalk to my vehicle and the guy walking towards me left the sidewalk and angled towards me for no reason. I just kept walking to the bar my wife was waiting at. Just was weird, but otherwise have felt safe the 4 x's I've been there the last 2 years.

Just wait until someone breaks into your house in the middle of the night and holds you for hours at gunpoint.

Number 1. Obviously not the best news for the local tourism industry.

To support rotorhead's comment: or just wait until a customer who owes your business a LOT of money for services rendered, comes into your place of business and shoots you...at 11 in the morning...in front of employees and other customers...yep, happened to my husband here on STX...

Who ever claims to have done this study, reminds me of someone that is educated beyond their means of intelligence and needs to come to the Islands and see how it is. Maybe President Trump needs to send down some federal troops and take care of all the crime and violence.

Anyone who thinks everything here is hunky-dory is on Fantasy Island. If you feel completely safe here you must not ever leave the house. I almost never go out at night and stay away from Charlotte Somalia and Little Beirut.

I avoid the projects at night unless someone calls us out to help with something, then we go.. never really felt like it was dangerous or unsafe though; everyone is super friendly. There is certainly lot of "opportunity" based crime.. I just don't give the opportunity anymore 😉

Sure it's not perfect, but if you understand the situation I don't see how you could be afraid of it.. fear is just a lack of knowledge.

Here is the problem with the internet... So they make a statement, there is nothing to support that statement, but it becomes part of the general background information in the world. Venezuela? There haven't been cruise ships calling at Venezuela for many years. St Thomas is worse than Ivory Coast? This is truly alternative news...

Speee1dy - yes, it happened back in Dec. Customer who owed 42k came into his place of business. He was asked if he was there to pay his bill (with 12k off, no less, in order to just be "done with it" - if not, please leave. To which he said he owed nothing - of note, he has owed the business money for 6 years, prior to my husband owning the business, and has had certified letters sent to him several times trying to collect on the debt. After cussing and posturing, he pulled out his 9mm, told my husband he would "kill you where you stand", and proceeded to shoot him in the leg. Fortunately, he was a bad shot (holding the gun all gansta/Hollywood style and he is blind in one eye...and, fortunately, my husband did not have his weapon on him at the time (he carries daily, just not on his person - his gun was in the office) or else the perpatrator would have been badly wounded, or injured. My husband is a former Marine. Both the VI Daily News and VI Consortium reported the incident had "no injuries"...that was from the Public Information Officer from VIPD - even though my husband was interviewed by 3 detectives while his gunshot wound was being taken care of by one of the staff who is EMT trained...and VIPD Forensics came to investigate the situation as well. I believe my husband (and I) would dispute the 'no injury' claim, since he now has a divot in his leg and we spent 6 hours in the Emergency Room at Juan Luis...

Yes, to bad your husband did not have his gun with him (and I am one who supports tough gun controls).

Overly tough gun laws here are part of the reason that there is so much gun violence

I am one who supports tough gun controls.

cause making it harder for law abiding citizens to protect them selves is a just cause!

If the USVI isn't proof of the failure of gun control, I don't know what is.

Doubt there was any actual studying done. Just picked up from news reports and other web sites. They're just an aggregator, putting it out there for the ad clicks.

trump can't legally send troops. But I sure wish he could.

Vicanuck, speee1dy, stcmike, yes, it is unfortunate he did not have his gun holstered. His work has him on and off boats, in the water, crawling around in awkward spaces, so not exactly conducive for carrying on his person (not impossible, just not comfortable). The SOB is incredibly lucky, really...after seeing my husband shoot recently, he most likely would have been a dead man. And, in this situation, the perpatrator is licensed to carry also (even though it is a relatively well known fact on island that he is a drug runner)...doesn't matter though....that's the VI for you...

Even BETTER proof that gun control is pointless & in this case, detrimental..
