There is a music festival I am interested in going to in December and I tried to book a flight from stt to jamaica but it's over 600$ and you have to fly back to NYC then back south. I obviously won't do that and was just wondering if there are ferries that will go from either PR or STT to jamaica? Do charter boats go that far from the islands? Any other suggestions? Thanks a lot!

Try LIAT airlines. They might go there - they go down island.

No ferries. American goes to Jamaica, changing planes in Miami, but the fare is still high.

Kevo: One of the irritating things about living here is the high cost of moving around within the Caribbean. Many places require a stop in the states! I was looking at airfares to St Lucia. I found a $400 one way on American (have to fly to PR or Miami first) and a $200 one way on LIAT- with 3 to 5 stops! ARGHH!!

You know the old saying- You can't get there from here...:-X

Just curious - which music festival are you trying to go to ? I live in St. Croix and travel to Jamaica every Christmas and go to many music stage shows while I'm there.

Getting to Jamaica is the same situation from St. Thomas - unfortunately, the only option is to change planes in Miami or overnight in St. Maarten or Antigua. The fares for both options tend to be in the $600-700 range, so Miami is the only feasible option because of the overnighting costs via St. Maarten or Antigua. It takes about 6-7 hours with the connection in Miami, so it isn't TOO bad.

Inter-Caribbean travel is notoriously expensive and difficult. I recently traveled from Jamaica to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, which is on the NEIGHBORING island only 300 miles away... guess what travel options I had? A six-seven hour journey via either Miami or Panama..... I took Panama cus I hate the idea of waiting in long lines, clearing US Immigration and Customs just to leave the US in another two hours. Took 1500 miles to travel to a Caribbean island only 300 miles away, craziness! The last time I flew from Jamaica to St. Croix via Miami, there were Haitians on the plane from Jamaica to Miami trying to get to Haiti !!!!!!!! You can see Haiti from Jamaica, yet you have to fly up to Miami and back to get there ?!?!!?!!!

It is a bummer that it costs so much for intra-Caribbean travel but i suppose it's because of the low demand. The airlines probably wouldn't have enough volume for regular flights to/from so many small islands.

DL, it's called Caribbean holidaze.... it's a festival hosted by the disco biscuits. All the bands are not very big names (they are all mostly electronic jambands). it's going to be a blast but it's not worth paying an extra 600$ just to get there. Oh well. thanks for the advise
