we think we may be experiencing a freon leak in our as unit. it smells similar to a gas smell and is not present all the time, only occasionally.we most definitely know the difference between this smell and that of mold.several of the local ac repair companies have just dismissed our concerns.could it be a freon leak?? anyone know of an excellent repairman who could address our concerns??we would appreciate any suggestions, information etc. as soon as possible. thanks

If a Freon leak, the repairman should be able to tell when he test the pressure of the units-----and if Freon level low, this flags a potential Freon leak. If you had a history of the unit needed repair for not cooling properly, could be as a result of Freon leak. Soapy water on copper line and near fitting is the tool to find a leak-----if it bubbles when exposed to soapy water.......you have a leak. Works on the outside, but not on wall mounted air handler.

If the smell is stronger when you first start the unit, and or when sitting idle for a while, this could indicate a drainage problem in the unit---which you wont see. A good PMCS(preventative Maintenance Check) by a Ac technician would include dropping ac tablet in the drainage line of the unit near the inside handler on the wall.

When I worked at Bucanneer we had to do this 2-3 times a year on all the rooms.

Also, maybe call Quality Electric and ask for Wess, He is the rep. for Mitshibisi AC units, and could give you names of a few certified repairmen-------and if your not satisfied with the results, ask Wess to come out and look at it , especially with your concerns of possible Freon leaks and technicians not finding the problem on a Mitshibusi AC unit.

Good luck, but if I was betting person and from experience, I bet the smell is coming from the drainage line on the unit.........and it is different from mold smell, I have personally smelled it and most of the time it smells like stagnet water with a little chemical smell. Usually is stong after first starting the unit. l.

Lilly,
Freon really doesn't have an odor. As much as it pains me to do so, I think I have to agree with John. :>)

Well I was an excellent HVAC/R guy in a past life.
Refrigerant has no odor unless you are sniffing straight from a can.
The above are very likely correct.
Stinky feet/sweat sox is best treated by drain pan tablets on a rountine basis.
The slime mold that can grow is truly revolting LOL

anyone having ac with a gravity drain can save a lot of aggravation by using a wet vac to suck out the snot (slime mold) from the drain line on a regular basis.

I live in STT and have an excellent AC repair guy.
I like to have the split unit system cleaned at least every 2 yrs.

You'd be surprised at stuff that accumulates.
I do clean the filter itself monthly when in use during its use during summer months then look forward to winter and not using it at all
when our winter coolness moves in from Nov. - usually end of May.
