Family considering relocating to St. John

Hi all,

I'm new to this message board, and have enjoyed reading a lot of your messages regarding your residing in USVI.

My husband, four year old child and I have seriously been considering relocating (from California) to the beautiful island of St. John.

With this in mind, I was wondering if any of you have advice with regards to safety, which areas to look for rentals, and anything else you might think of for a family (we had visited St. Thomas about a year ago, and St. John we only had the chance to see for one day).

Also, since my husband has been in the swimming pool industry for an extensive number of years, we thought St. John might be a place to start a pool service business. Any thoughts on that?

Thank you all, and look forward to hearing from any of you, as well as reading more of your posts!

There are several pool service businesses in the VI, and they tend to hire people they know, often times people from the same island i.e. the people at one firm are all originally from Montserrat, though they did not meet until they were in the VI. I don't know if there is sufficient business for an additional pool service company, and I'm not sure how you'd find out, because your potential competitors aren't going to share information that might have a negative effect on their bottom line. I'm sure you're aware that one income in the pool service industry would likely be insufficient, so what type of work would you be looking for?

Thanks for the info dntw8up.

I would also look for any other type of work (retail, general office, restaurant, etc., etc.) that's available. I've read from other blogs that those that had moved to the VI basically get a job after they've moved over there.

Most employers don't hire until you're actually in front of them. It might be worth the $$ to do a pre-move visit, especially since you're moving with a child & check the costs of things, the schools, etc. Hope it works out for you.

Yeah, the pre-move visit definitely sounds like the smart thing to do. We've done a lot of research as far as costs, etc. Nevertheless, the more research and knowledge always helps, and if we're actually there we can then really see it for ourselves.

Thanks Trade.

We could use an honest and reliable pool service company on STT! From my experience if you say what you will do, and do it for a reasonable price you would do well!

One of the things you will need to do if you want to work for hotels or condo associations is get liability insurance. Not a trivial matter in the VI. On STX only one or two firms have the required insurance.

Can anyone recommend a good shipping service, to ship household goods from California to the U.S.V.I.?

Thanks.

There are only a few shipping services from the main land. Tropical is the largest but CarribTrans is a smaller company. . If you call them they will be able to tell you the best route from Cal. I have shipped stuff down for NJ as well as all over the country, as well as out of the country. All boat shipments go out of Miami. So you can ship your stuff overland to Miami.

But beware of the costs. If you ship a car you will need to pay the ground shipping costs, the boat to STT, a road tax, and if the car is n ot made in the us an additional tax. So get a quote on this. As far as other things are concerned you might be better off selling the stuff and buying it on STJ. Your call.

Good luck.

Billd
