While I was doing some shopping in Kmart a teenage boy (high school age I would estimate) and an elementary school age boy that was with him, both greeted me with, "Good Afternoon" to which I greeted them back with a "Good Afternoon" with a big smile on my face.

These young boys did not know me from Adam and went out of their way to greet me. I just got a warm feeling about it. Someone is raising them the right way.

It is one of the things I love about St. Croix - the hearty welcome everywhere, all times of day. I return it and do the best I can as I work to no longer be the "newcomer on island."

There are younger people working at Home Depot here on STX who put the customer service at any continental "Big Box" stores to shame. Yesterday I was helped by Michael in the gardening department - super kind, friendly, helpful - went out of his way to help me out. Really great. 🙂

I walk into the bank or to the PO or pretty much anywhere and it's second nature to get into the line and bid a cheery general, "Good Morning/Day/Afternoon/Evening". Customers do get disgruntled over a long wait (even given "island time") and those sour faces gentle up a whole lot when the reciprocal greeting is exchanged. Then you get into mutually doing the quiet "suck teeth" and interactive muttering routine as sometimes the wait drags on!
