So today my fiancés car broke down on the way to work. Belt blew. He called me to pick him up and to take him to work but as I pulled up there's a guy helping him. He said 4 others stopped too.

We knew the belt was gonna go soon as it was making horrible noises and we had even bought a belt ready to put on.

This guy - "Cayenne" took time from his day to help remove the belt - even running to his house down the street for the right tools. When we all realized it wasn't the right belt he followed us to advanced auto where he knew everyone there, went into the back and grabbed the right belt. We then drove back up the hill near drakes seat where he totally fixed the car.

I mean REALLY!? How awesome is that! Super nice guy and is great to see people doing good things!! It's easy to focus on the negative and lately even I've been bumming about the trash that seems to be worse but this was a nice refreshing bit of positivity.

Side note he broke down right at the base of the hull going west to drakes... Did you notice they filled the massive potholes!!! My CRV always got wrecked on those, it was a god day 🙂

People used to always stop to help, and I think they still do that most of the time, here in the islands. Not so much on the mainland. Everyone assumes the person has a cell phone and has called for AAA . Glad you had a positive experience, just when the garbage and pots holes were piling up! 🙂

Always good to hear such stories.

One that stands out for me happened a few years back when I walked out to find that one of my car tires was completely flat. I'd only had the car a short while and had no idea where the spare was located. Turns out it was underneath the rear chassis and there was a pole to stick in a hole and then wind to lower it but I couldn't find the darned hole and neither could a friend who came over to try and help.

So off we went to the local dealership and one of the mechanics working out back directed me to another who showed me on a similar vehicle where the aperture was located. That was great BUT he insisted on following us back to my place where he not only got the spare down but changed the tire (and stopped a friend passing by on the road to borrow his heavy jack since none that we had was good enough!) and wouldn't accept a PENNY for all his help. That was just awesome. I had the restaurant at the time and begged him to bring his wife in for dinner on me one evening but he never did.

Random acts of kindness and all one can do sometimes is remember to pay it back down the line whenever you have a chance. 😀

Glad you had such a good experience that gave you back a positive spin on things. We often get weighted down by the negativity and absurdities of daily life in the VI as we go about our business.

It's nice to remember that things like this happens more often than not just when you're ready to pull your hair out over excessive pothole craters, bad drivers, our trash-strewn island, VI Government ineptitude and waste, etc.

Love to hear the good stories/things that clearly happen on the islands!

Alana33 and et. al...

Speaking of trash...

1) Is there a community day or weekend where the islanders are encouraged to get out and help pick up trash on the beaches, alongside the roads? Or, as too many other places, does every simply rely on and hope that the local government does that?

2) Where is the landfill on St. Croix?

Thanks.

Various non profits sponsor clean ups from time to time, but no regular schedule.

I bring a small bag like from Plaza with me to whatever beach I go and fill it before we leave. I make a pass up and down while looking for sea glass. If 1/3 of people did that there would be no need for organized clean ups. I was even surprised at the amount I cleaned up last weekend at Trunk Bay. People are pigs.

Most of those are beach clean-ups. Much needed, unfortunately.
No roadside cleanups that I'm aware of.
VI Waste Management Authority manages contracts for waste haulers. They don't know how to actually manage the waste, itself nor do they sponsor beach cleanups.

Sorry to get off topic!

We don't have a landfill on STX. We have a dump. It is east of the airport.

I have often seen large youth groups in matching T shirts with garbage bags cleaning the roadsides early on weekend mornings - usually on the East End roads.
I am sure it is usually some volunteer community project but also remember a summer program that was govt. sponsored in the past.
http://stthomassource.com/content/community/organizations/2001/05/02/clean-preen-students-collect-epa-award

It has always been suggested that involving youth in roadside clean-ups inspires a stronger respect for the environment later in life.

Thanks all! Need a movement on STX too. 🙂 Need to get out elected officials involved.

Dump east of airport. Got it. Good to hear that there are some more conscientious citizens of the islands doing their part to make it better for all. Promising.

We also have a "convenience center" in Peter's Rest. It's great!! First, it's landscaped (It was even decorated for Christmas.) and no loose garbage around. The attendants are very nice and helpful and not looking for tips. There are several bins for different types of garbage, including a place for electronics, so you don't need to wait for one of those special days, like some places. There is even a bin for recycling cans, Although, a couple of days ago the recycle bin had been scaled back to just a small area and the regular bin was being used for other trash.

The Peters Rest facility is the greatest thing to happen for waste on STX. I made about 15 trips there in the last month and everything that you say is completely true. Now that it is proven how well it works and is maintained, it's time to build a few more.
