In today's Avis that CWC bill passed the committee on Friday along with some other bills. Goes to Rules next.

Thanks to those who posted their gun experience. You help separate reality from fiction, because the local media cannot cover all the issues in today's complex society.
.
IMO, the gun controls we have here benefit those who buy and carry illegally, so we need laws that can help potential victims protect themselves.

It has been widely reported for years that our police force is inadequate on so many levels so give the residents more tools to protect their lives and property.

Well I did take the Florida G license course which automatically qualifies you for a CCW. The G course covers firearms safety in depth along with Florida statutes on deadly force and concealment. I held an open carry permit in NJ and had prior experience with guns however I opted for the more intense training. After not holding a firearm for more that twenty years I qualified with a 227 out of 240. So the extra class time was worth it.

Firing one shot at a target is nonsense IMHO. Because all that does teach you is which end the bullet exits from. You must have attended one of those fly by night schools that sits you in a room and turns on a video and the instructor leaves the room. Florida is cracking down on such "schools" and you may have to qualify for real when they figure it out and revoke your permit.

I took the class just because I was interested in seeing what was involved in getting a permit and as I stated not much.

As for my firearm qualifications I shot on my company's pistol team back when I was in the Army. I still go to the range regularly to keep my skills fresh and though I'm licensed I seldom carry a gun for self protection because IMHO a shotgun is a much better weapon for close in fighting and self protection.

In regard to training, all that was required for me to get both the VI and FL permits was proof of having completed a firearm safety course. No hour requirement was stated. I have friends in FL who have also knocked out the requirement in an afternoon. Maybe the recommended course is more stringent in your area.

What area? All Florida requirements are statewide.

Jim, I'm just wondering if that target was in the shape of a foot.
