Yep, however, you will find that the kind of helmet doesn't seem to matter...I've seen folks wearing football helmets...bicycle helmets...batting helmets from baseball....polo helmets.....you name it...I would guess that around 75% of the helmets worn here do NOT meet DOT standards (I know mine doesn't, but it keeps ya from getting a ticket...no protection, either, of course...), And it's always worth a chuckle to see a Rasta w/ his dreads piled up 2 feet above his head and an imitation helmet sitting on top of his hair w/ a string wrapped around it to hold it on! Haha!

Just the mental image alone is funny...much less seeing it in person!

Ha ha -- Marty, you nailed it!

http://failblog.org/2009/05/06/helmet-fail-2/ pretty much sums it up. I don't think this photo was taken in the USVI, but you gotta love the perfectly functional helmet strapped to the handlebars....

Not legally required, but you're an idiot if you skip it: eye protection. One mosquito in the eye and it's all over. If you skip the face shield and you don't wear prescription glasses, make sure you have something you can use after dark -- wearing sunglasses at night doesn't work outside of 80s song lyrics. 🙂

I just found out I need to sell my bike in CT, as it will cost more to ship than it's worth. Can you buy an motorcycle anywhere in the VI?

Depends on what kind of bike you are looking for, and what price range. I can't remember -- you're heading to STT or STX?

I'm on St Croix. The bike was a 1988 Suzuki Cavalcade 1400 in pristine condition with 45k on it. Would probably be too much for the island, but it was a collector.

Not sure what I would get here, best deal for the $ I suppose.

Hubby was at the Post Office a couple of weeks ago and listened to a story told by a police officer here on STX. It seems a couple on a scooter pulled into the gas station. NAKED. Well not completely. The man had a beer box over his genitals and the woman had a piece of foliage, (a piece of bush) over hers, was the officers recollection. The man got off the scooter and did a little bump and grind winnie wag. The officer walked up and asked them where they had been. A party was the reply. The man went into the gas station store and bought some beer. The officer said he let them go without a citation because they did not appear drunk and were not harming anyone.

Folks, I really don't think you have to worry about a helmet law on St. Croix.

What if you have a medical statement and sufficient major medical insurance - can that used to waive wearing a helmet?

Until 2012 you didn’t even need a motorcycle license here.

Most laws here are disregarded unless your seriously endangering others, and even then, if your related to the right person, it still won’t matter.

My favorite BMV law is the yearly required safety inspections. Some of the vehicles you see on the road are true death traps, and yet they pass inspection. It’s a joke really, everyone knows “somebody” who, for around $50, can get you an inspection sticker. The other motor vehicle joke is people riding in the beds of pickup trucks. You’ll see it everyday here.

I was never a fan of helmet laws, seatbelt laws, laws against riding in the back of pickups, and all the other ridiculously unenforceable laws up in the states. I think they’re all good ideas to abide by, but I like, that for the most part, they leave you alone down here. There is a sense of more personal freedom here as a result.

If you live here full-time, you learn to appreciate little things like this. Just use common sense, be patient, and go with the flow.

Absolutely false.  I got my motorcycle license at 15 in 1973.

Yes, if you had a car license you could drive a motorcycle. In 2012 they required the Motorcycle Safety Course endorsement on your license. But before that if you did not have a car license you could get a motorcycle license. In the 70's you could not get a car license until you were 18 (there was no drivers ed back then) so for many of us a motorcycle license was the only way to legally get around independent.

I remember the day I got my motorcycle license at 15. My  dad said "well, now you are old enough to drive to work". I worked every Christmas holiday and summer until I graduated.
