I am thinking of getting a scooter. Are helmets required by law?

yes, but apparently anything "helmet like" counts... I've seen cops with bicycle helmets on riding ATV's & it's very common to see bicycle helmets in place of DOT style motorcycle helmets.

You should make sure you have adequate health insurance before you even think about getting on a scooter or motorcycle here.

Along with all your affairs in order and a subscription to one of the local ambulance airlift companies.

Before they had an actual helmet law, one used see guys riding around with a cooking pot on their heads.
You can call Motor Vehicle Dept. to check on regulations.

The post asked a simple question about helmet laws - not your opinions on the safety of riding a bike. Anyone who rides here knows there is some risk involved. Risk is part of life. There is no need for additional comment from those that likely don't even ride. Why not stick to being helpful and just answering the question. Yes - the VI has helmet laws.

O.K. They have helmet laws. It's also far more risky here because of all the morons talking and texting running stop signs etc. There's also no shoulder on most roads and taxi vans run cars off the road never mind bikes.
P.S. The OP has the right to know how risky it is riding here.

The OP hasn't yet moved here so is probably completely unaware of the risks after just one (I believe) short visit here. Most people would find such cautionary advice helpful.

Then be specific about the risks - if you can speak from experience.

Making snarky comments about the need for medical coverage isn't the same thing.

Besides those sort of amateur snarky comments are a poor reflection on the true level of snarkiness that is expected on this site.

Snarky you be indeed and obviously one not accustomed to appreciating a little levity. The pitfalls have been addressed on this forum on many occasions over the years so the OP might like to do a search for "scooters" or "motorcycles" via the search engine. Yes, I can speak from experience but since the information is already here, no point in repeating it.

I often ride a motorcycle at my primary home in Texas. Own a second home in Christenstead and have driven all over St Croix. (Car, not a motorcycle)

Just gotta say that there are a lot of Texas streets and roads as bad as the worst roads on St Croix. Compared to other carribean islands, I am generally impressed with conditions of the majority of the roads on St Croix.

And "your" not the only one who apparently thinks that potential newcomers should automatically know that there are risks involved in riding two-wheelers here and that a specific question about whether or not helmets are required should be answered only with that information and the (very real) risks ignored.

My understanding has always been that the word "forum" pertains to "discussion" and if "your" someone who can't recognize irony coupled with truth without a big emoticon finishing a succinct comment then "your" simply going to have to keep reminding those posters you find so lacking so that they hopefully (eventually) learn to toe the line. :D:D:D:D

WOW!!!! I am a grown adult. If someone so concerned about my safety would like to sell a vehicle cheap i would certainly entertain the thought. Anyone that has to be this snarky should get off the couch and get a hobby.

So, I've been riding off and on for 3 years here (broke my leg riding this summer, back to riding again now) I don't know that this place is any worse than else where.. be defensive & don't trust anyone wrapped in a steel cage (just like everywhere else) and you should be fine.

Personally I think motorcycles get the smoothest roads on the island, I can place my tires between potholes easily & the new pavement from the fiber runs is a perfect motorcycle sized patch of smooth pavement nearly everywhere on the island.

After all is said, the VI roads may not be the place to learn if you have no prior experience in driving motorcycles. If you've got prior experience, you'll be ahead of the curve, literally.

Come on down, buy a bike and ride without a helmet. Why listen to any of us? Go for it!

Isn't that smooth pavement strip only on one side of the roads? Might be great going one direction but a bit dicey going the other way.

Here on STT, those strips are where many of the craters, I mean potholes, originate. STX must be better suited for motorcycles and scooters since it has much flatter land areas. I've come across my share of riders, laid to waste on
our roads on sharp hillside corners. Many of them, tourists, thinking a scooter would be a fun way to see the island not anticipating their lack of skill, our crazy roads and drivers.

I don't believe anyone suggested riding without one. Just remember asking about the law in case had to ride without one to get one. Thanks for the help. Glad I didn't ask a question requiring more than a one word answer. We may never have gotten to it.

Indeed, being offered unsolicited advice can be a real chore of a bore. Many appreciate it and some don't but you've made your point and hopefully if you have further questions they'll just be answered with a simple yay or nay. Much easier! 😀
