Home here in Michigan just sold very quickly, with closing date of 8 September, now it's real! I'm sure it's probably been addressed many times before on here and if I sifted through the many threads, the info could be found, but am particularly looking for recent success stories with shipping both car and household items. Will rent during first year, then buy once I've gotten relicensed as a real estate broker in the USVI (have been in touch with the dept of licensing regulation), preferring to rent first in STJ as well as buy later in STJ but realistically probably have to rent first in STT, with a move later to STJ, due to its scarce housing availability and being accompanied by a pet ($1,750-2,750/month rent target for just my 17 lb pug and myself). Here's a visual, am shipping a Jeep Sahara Unlimited and only as many household and personal items as I can fit into it enroute to the port of departure in Florida (probably Miami), with my understanding that those items inside the vehicle will need to be packed and shipped separately. My pug and I will follow a couple of weeks later on our flight. My question, who's better, International Logistics (I know they're a sponsor on this site) or Blue Ocean Transport? Points of contact you've had personal success with recently would be most appreciated. Please feel free to PM or post publicly, whichever is appropriate. Thanks my VIMC friends, you've been such a valuable resource during this exciting transition to the next chapter of my life!

I live on STX and used International Logistics. Mimi was great and guided us all the way. She was referred by a dear friend who had used her the year before we moved back. We flew out of Miami as we, too, had pets.
I'm assuming your pug will fly with you in cabin as I don't think the breed is allowed in cargo on any flights no matter what the temperature is.

Hi! Looks like we ar emoting around the same time! We are shipping our jeep as well from Miami and driving it from Utah. We read you can fill your car with your goods and ship that all together. At least that is what we were planning on. Although now I'm worried! Haha

It depends on the shipping company. I believe there is one that still allows this; the others do not. Call them up and ask; you don't want to find out at the dock!

We moved to STJ in June & used Blue Ocean to ship our Jeep. Very happy with them- they also referred us to a broker (his name was Darwin) so the vehicle was registered, plated & waiting for us at the airport when we landed! We called several places for quotes- they are reasonably priced & were the most helpful answering all our questions. They picked our Jeep up from us in Greenwood IN. Would highly recommend!

Also, I would think you'd be able to find housing pretty easily given your budget on STJ. If STJ is where you want to be, go for it. There's a big difference between STT & STJ. My preference is absolutely STJ. Much more laid back, less congestion.

FYI, your vehicle cannot contain anything inside of it while being shipped, and gas must be at a quarter tank or less. Our original plan was to fill our Jeep with a few boxes... that got squashed pretty quickly. We moved with just our suitcases.

I think that contents requirement is customs requirement so it's not going to vary by shipping company.

Thanks Edw94 for the great car shipping contact info and relaying your success story, will definitely be in contact with them.

On a side note, grew up in Columbus, IN...fond childhood memories of family day trips up to your Greenwood for our parents to do their Christmas shopping at your mall, was the annual tradition for years, Mom and Dad taking turns watching us 4 kids while the other was shopping and filling the trunk with "Santa's" stash, never to be seen until daybreak Christmas morning, lmao, and somehow they always pulled it off!

It is up to the shipping company, Customs doesn't have a problem with it. The shipping companies don't allow it because of liability and insurance; there was a rash of vehicle break-ins a few years back both in the yards and on vessels. Also, people were shipping cars with gas cans, propane tanks, etc. Easier for the shipping companies to just say no.
Full disclosure: I work for a shipping company.
More: when we moved here in 2013, Meme St John at International Logistics told us we could ship our truck with cargo in the bed (locked camper shell); after driving from Denver to Miami, Sea Star said "No, we don't do that anymore." That whole story is on here somewhere; bad day all around.

Please keep us posted on how it goes! I am planning the exact same exodus (except to STX) within the next year and will be bringing my terrier with me so any info you can share will be greatly appreciated.
