How do I change my mailing address with the IRB?

I've moved to Maui and would love to see my income tax refund from the VIs. I definitely don't trust those ladies at Red Hook Mail Center to forward my mail (nor do I want to pay $25/month for the number of months it may take before the IRB sees fit to mail it to me!) I haven't had any luck searching their website. If calling is my only option, I suppose I'll set the alarm for 3AM as we are six hours behind y'all in STT. Has anyone gotten a refund from last year yet, btw? Thanks, as always, for your help! Mahalo...

"I definitely don't trust those ladies at Red Hook Mail Center to forward my mail"

Did you ask for it to be forwarded and you don't believe in them? I have never heard anything bad about them.

Let me rephrase...I don't trust something as important to me as a large government check to just one method of attainment. I would much prefer to be able to alert the IRB of my correct address BEFORE it gets sent to the wrong one to be forwarded -- eliminate the middleman, so to speak. Additionally, at some point by paying $25 per month to have this single piece of mail forwarded (which I have no idea how many more months it will take to be mailed at all) my refund may equal the cost of forwarding it!

I think that all the tax refund centers in the States and territories send checks to the address on the return. My friend does taxes, so I'll check with her tomorrow.

Thank you, ms411. I didn't know in April what my address would be when refunds were mailed, therefore I used the address that was current at the time.

Maybe you should just go down there, ask to see someone about the mail address change, get their name and extension number so you will have a particular person to call/contact to inquire whether your refund has been mailed to your new address or not.
I know.........it's a hassel but better to have a contact than not since you will be so far away. Be sure to ask which year they think your refund shall be issued. 😮

Go down where? I am in Kihei, HI. I'm willing to try calling, however, despite the six-hour time difference.

STX Jill, thank you for the link to the form. I can sleep easier now.

Has anyone received a refund for 2012 yet?

Sorry, VIsnorkeler. My goof.
Good luck on your move to the beautiful island of Maui.
Let us know how you like it and the prices for electricity, gas and goods there.
Good luck with getting your tax refund as well.
You know this can take awhile?
Luckily they no longer make you wait 3-4 yrs. but it is not surprisng to wait a yr.

I would call IRB and ask. If you're waiting for a refund from IRB, then submitting a form to the IRS won't do it. Maybe the IRB will tell you to submit the IRS form to the IRB.

The form should be submitted to the VI Bureau of Revenue.

I checked with my friend, and she doesn't think the IRB will acknowledge that form. She says the post office is your only option. That was also the opinion of eveeybody else. They also don't think we'll get refunds. 🙁

:S There have been several times over the years when tax refunds have been extremely slow in being sent out but I've never heard of them NOT being sent out ...

The govt brings in less revenue year after year. Our finances are similar to Detroit, IMO.

I haven't heard of anyone receiving their 2012 refund as of yet. A friend did receive their 2011 refund a couple of months ago. Wonder if they have all the back years taken care of yet. Anyone still waiting for 2011 or prior?

I think it's going to be a very very long time before the VI govt has $ to pay 2012 refunds.

They borrowed something like $120 million last year and from the article I read at the time, only $30 mil of that money was earmarked for 2010 and 2011 refunds. Now the VI gov't is trying to open a "line of credit" for $40 mil and this is just to help finance the restoration of the 8% that was cut from govt worker salaries.

I have yet to see any article about the VI govt mention where they stand with 2010, 2011 or even 2012 refunds.

I think it is highly unilkely that outstanding refunds will be paid anytime soon. It is in everyone's best interest to adjust their withholding so that they break even or even owe the govt $. Or you can apply your refund to next year (there's a box you check on your return) and then you can adjust your withholding accordingly and basically pay yourself back through the year. I did this, and it has given me such peace of mind!

So yeah, has anyone gotten their 2012 refund yet?

And is anyone still owed for 2010 or 2011?

For some, adjusting withholding doesn't do anything. I usually end up having a refund owed from VIBIR and end up owing about the same amount for Med and SS to IRS and we can't make one wash the other. 🙁

Hi Visnorkeler,

Best to call VIBIR and ask directly.
The number is 340-774-7870 for collections and other functions.
There is a toll free number for taxpayer assistance: 800-829-1040.
Be sure to keep name and extension number of person you speak to for future reference.
Good Luck.

No wonder so many people and businesses file with the IRS in the states rather than here.

OldTart, my question exactly. I thought that if you were a bonafide resident of the VI that you HAD to file with the IRB here. I did not believe that you had a choice.
.
When we lived out of the country, we filed our taxes with the IRS in Austin, TX. I wish we were still filing in Austin, Tx as we are still dealing with our personal 2010 return with IRB.

Well, heck if I can find it on line, but The Daily News on Saturday had an article: "V.I. residents should expect a delay in receiving tax refunds" which quoted the IRB director saying, "I don't know when refunds will be paid."

Good luck Hawaii snorkeler!;)
