Marian Mathes is THE WORST Insurance broker I`ve EVER come in contact with!
The way they handle claims(my claim is over 2 years old! & I NEVER received a SINGLE answer without several faxes & Phone calls, if wasting your time is your hobby, you came to the right place!
And the answer they give, CLAIM DENIED!< That is ALWAYS THE ANSWER! In meeting in their office many many times, I`ve run into several distraught customers, EVERY TIME!
This HAS to say something.
Their claims adjuster, Crawford VI has even evaded the Lieutenant's Governor's Office (who is supposed to police the Insurance/banking here in the USVI). I HAVE PROOF!
It turns out, since it`s an election year, all the staff will be replaced by the new Lieutenant Governor.
Crawford, has many insurance whores available to them, for instance,a structural engineer who will lie & discuss how to drag the claim with the claim adjuster(he`ll do this right in front of you! Read your policy!, unbelievable!) There are currently 2, yes, 2 structural Engineers in St. Thomas, & the other one (not employed by Crawford VI) agrees with me! But he would`t testify against the other one as he says his time/court cost/deductible would eclipse the amount my honest estimate was for!!

If you want to waste your money, throw it in the garbage! Money in= NO MONEY out =Mariam Mathes!
But, oh no, you can`t do that because you have a mortgage!
OK, do you really want to pay them to self insure your self?????
Stay AWAY!
Far AWAY from them!!!
My claim REEKS of BAD FAITH!
Any Attorneys interested?
FYI, the insurance industry is not federally regulated! They have VERY strong lobbyist!

I had USAA and no problem. Of course, they cover you anywhere in the world.

Don, sorry to hear of your experience. For newcomers, that is also what living in the VI is all about.

PM me and i can see if any attorneys would be interested in speaking with you. It could be good money after bad though.

For auto insurance I use Family Insurance. Had a claim with them recently - ran over a rock and it ruined my transmission on a two month old car. They paid the day after the car was repaired. I would recommend them to anyone. By the way the rate is around $1100/year for a brand new car.

We always found First Bank Insurance to be excellent and reasonable.
Now then "Island Ed" ...we all now that Bad insurance companies can be found everywhere.

Yes Jane,
Don Rand's experience can happen anywhere. I was referring to the under the table corruption as a common experience of living in the VI. If Don "knew" someone, he would likely get treated differently. My only experience with them was that I was never able to place any coverage through Marian Mathes as they never could get quotes out in even a remotely timely fashion. I refer to Inter Ocean for homeowners coverage as they have always provided very good service.

I would still be interested to hire an attorney on a contingency basis.
I`m not willing to put good money to bad as this is why the other Structural Engineer said he could probably prove the first engineer was wrong, but after the deductibles & Expert witness fees, would it be Worth it?Would there be anything left? Remember, the quote was an honest quote, not a bloated one.
The bigger picture may be a lawsuit for bad faith as this is what this is. As of today,27 months after the episode, despite all my emails, faxes, phone calls & office visits, I have only been contacted by them Once, from Mariam Mathes herself, who personally assured me back in October, she would handle my claim, I have yet to get another response from her(the office is aware I`m still waiting).
I am sharing my experience with as many as I can, when ever I have the opportunity to do so.
Island Ed, I Do know people in the insurance industry, unfortunately, their in Puerto Rico & after their evaluation of my claim, informed me , the Syndicate Mariam Mathes is using is from Loyd's of London, which he says is the slowest to pay (if they pay at all).So I asked about Guardian, and,he said of the Guardian Insurance folks, the senior from Puerto Rico could`t make it in Puerto Rico but, has found the insurance business VERY LUCRATIVE here in the USVI.
He went on to explain that property insurance here soo bad, soo expensive, he suggested I sell my house & rent!
Look at the $3 million Tunic building, Tunic is not an insurance company, just a broker, some guy!
The insurance business is far too lucrative here!
My insurance friend in Puerto Rico also informs me that many liability cases here are awarded outrageous sums which scares some other, more competitive companies from doing business here(maybe they don`t know the right people either). And at the same time, they $crew legitimate claimants
Many are 10X or more the awards granted from stateside courts! He went on to say, if your writing liability insurance, you must also write property insurance as well...
I attended a meeting regarding Insurance here in the USVI @ Antillies School back in 2003.
Questions were raised as to why Tortolla & Puerto Rico have MUCH LOWER RATES...
The people there representing the Insurance companies stated the above huge sums awarded as the reason, & the hurricane damage we receive(yeah I know, were so far away from Puerto Rico & Tortolla!)
A Lawyer there also suggested Tort Reform (which limits the reward one can receive from a injury).
Hey, this sounded good to me! Though, many have explained to me the $ saved will not go towards lower premiums, but rather back to the huge Insurance coffers. The lawyer it turns out, represents one of the above named Insurance Companies!
I don`t know, does anyone have a positive Insurance experience here to share?
Are there any GOOD Insurance companies(by good, I mean that they do what their supposed to do, cover their clients, not just respond to them in a timely basis)
Is there hope?
If not, how do I invest??< What I mean by that is, how do I get in on this!<<
Being on the other side of the fence(where I`m an investor WITH the Insurance company who doesn`t pay, only collects).
This may be the only way I can afford to pay my insurance (which doesn`t cover ANYTHING), so I can continue to self insure myself !
Any ideas?

Hopefully this information will be of value to someone out there:

I am on STT and my auto insurance just came up for renewal. I was with Guardian and had a 500/1000 deductible. When I received my renewal bill from Guardian I decided to also get a quote from Tunick Insurance. Tunick came in at $346 less than Guardian and with a better deductible 250/500. I decided to go with Tunick.

I forgot to mention that $346 was the total savings for policies on two cars.
