Thinking about relocating to STX and wanted to know if JF is a good place to live. I've seen a couple of families on TV (Caribbean Life and House Hunters) choose JF. However, I don't trust what I see on TV. Looking at the MLS and Google Maps, it seems like a nice part of the island. Would love to get a local's opinion. Thanks.

Get in contact with a realtor. They will be able to tell you all about the different neighborhoods. Cynthia Taylor is a great realtor who till tell you like it is. I talked to another realtor who was awful. If you want to know who they were PM me and I'll let you know who to stay away from.

Great neighborhood. Gated, safer than most, central to everything, houses range greatly in price seaside views and locations and non seaside locations all in the same neighborhood.

I have attached the link of a realistic realtor.

I know a few people who live in JF, and I've been there several times. It would be a good place to live.

Safe= yes
Nice= mostly
Fancy= not by a long shot.

There are several nice homes in JF but there are also many poorly maintained homes as well. It is nothing like a hard community in the States. Most lots are 1 acre of land. It is by far the best neighborhood for taking an evening walk without getting run over.

FYI house hunters is a "retelling" of events, as home owners have lived in the selected house for sometimes years before filming and the other houses are usually a friend house or a listing from their realtor.

Pros: Gated (if that's what you want), large lots, mostly nice homes, centrally located, close to the water, nice neighborhood for walking and bike riding.....

Cons: Gated (Guards don't work for free), Large lots , lots of mowing, Close to the water (If too close your stuff will rust in no time).

All in all a good neighborhood.

JF is a nice area. Several homes there for rent. Try before you buy!

Nice area! we walk there quite often ( have to sign in before allowed on property).
Another nice area is Queens Quarter. Central island no water view and not gated.

There was a rash of break in's there last year. They clamped down at security. Neighborhood is pretty good for small children, no beach to walk to that you can swim in. Salt water air terrible in this area for electronics, cars etc.

Thanks to all for your comments. It's kind of nerve racking reading about the dangers of living on St. Croix. Just want to be sure I'm making the best decision. My personal opinion is that there is no perfect place to live. Crime is everywhere. In some ways, I feel more comfortable in areas that are known to be a little sketchy...keeps you on your toes. Stateside, you may live in a great neighborhood and think you're safe, then some nut job shows up at your kid's school like Rambo with a chip on his shoulder.
Life is what you make it. Two people can look at the same situation very differently. One person may see danger, disappointment, and dysfunction, while the other may see nothing but abundant opportunity. I choose to adopt the mindset of the latter.
Stay thirsty my friends 🙂

Don't believe all the negativity that you read here.

Does that mean people posting here are lying about their personal experiences?

In general most people aren't lying about their personal experiences....and that's the thing...it's peoples personal opinions, which we are all entitled to. Sometimes the truth isn't always pretty.

No. What it is is a caution to put things in perspective and appreciate that it's human nature (unfortunately, and very common on forums) to accentuate the negative over the positive.

The views at Jf are spectacular if your on the hills. On a clear day you can see the other VI's in the distance, and at night you can see the cruise ships leaving st Thomas.

I can also confirm that the salt air here is murder on metal and electronics.

The shore is swimmable in places, but there are a lot of urchins just of shore so be cautious.

Not being able to do yard work or use power tools on Sunday or holidays is a deal breaker for me. I could never live in a community with a homeowners association that is so restrictive.

And a stupid rule prohibiting line drying laundry! Too many rules for us!!

Bet they don't have chickens and roosters running all over the place, either!
