Hi all,
I will be in STT for my pre-move visit on 7/28 - 8/4. I have been researching all of the resources available on this page (which is amazing, btw) but wanted to reach out now that my trip is actually booked, and have my move date set (September 1st). I'm 32 and am a marketing professional, currently living in Cincinnati, Ohio. I will be bringing my dog with me (corgie/sheltie mix, 8 yrs old) and would like some advise during my apartment/job search. I will be moving my car with me, so commuting is not an issue. From what I've read, it's easier to job search while in the area, as opposed to online. I'm open to any type of employment, whether that be in the marketing profession, or food services. I also have money saved so that I'm not too stressed if I don't find something right away. Any recommendations on who to contact, or what to do, during my search, would be greatly appreciated!

There are a few wholesale food merchants on St Thomas and one which you might consider contacting is Merchants Market:

They're a large, well-run organization and although they don't have a big sales staff turnover, it's certainly worth reaching out to them. Good luck!

You can check this company and see if your skills match their needs.
My tenants work for them and relocated here 3 years ago to do so.
They're still here and happy with their jobs, their Great Danes they moved here with, their new adopted shelter pup and island life.

As far as rentals go, you really should figure out where you'll be working in order to figure out commuting back and forth.

Sarah: Welcome to the board! You sound like you are very organized in your approach. Have you been to St Thomas before? I would suggest that you leave your dog behind for the week you are visiting. It will be tough to find housing for a week with a dog. While you are here, you can look for apartments and see if they are suitable for both of you.
Yes, it is easier to job search when you are here. You go somewhere that interests you, talk to people, ask for other names, repeat. It is an old-fashioned networking method, but you will have names and faces. When you say "food services", did you mean restaurants?
This may be a very stupid question, but, what does a marketing professional do?

Thanks to all for the help! Do realtors in the area show rental properties, or just home sales? I'm just not sure about the best way to apartment hunt.

Realtors deal with rentals as well as sales and many of them advertise on craigslistvi. Apart from craigslist, there are always ads in the VI Daily News, and in the Island Trader which is a free weekly advertising paper published every Thursday and available at most supermarkets and convenience stores. Once you have your car here, many private landlords also put up roadside signs and of course there's always word of mouth - and the classified section here on VINow.
Ronnie at the Crystal Palace B&B above town is known for his invaluable help to newcomers over the years and his would be a good place to stay (he's a pet-friendly landlord!) while you become acclimated to the island and get to know your way around.

Sarah, my husband and I are moving to STT in October and he was born and raised in Cincinnati! I also lived there for several years (I graduated from XU). It's good to know someone will be on the island from the Queen City! 🙂
