I got an ATT cel just before coming to STX & now that my contract is up I need to make a change. Oddly, when I looked at this condo I had 3 bars & now that I have moved in only 1 or 2, enough to text but calls run from awful to impossible. Friends with Sprint who also live in Vista Mar say their service is OK, but only in some areas. So far I have not found 1 of those areas, so I started thinking land line & got sidetracked by talk about MaJicK Jack & other voip options. I am no tech head, thus pretty clueless about how this works. Do I need top of the line internet or will choice do? Do I need a smarter phone than I have. In other words "DOH"

Have you tried a signal booster? I've seen them in Radio Shack on STT and I think you can get one from ATT. We had similar problem on STJ and booster fixed it.

Purchase a MicroCell from AT&T if you have an Internet connection.

Gives you the equivalent of your own cell tower inside your unit.

They work great. Even when one of AT&T's cell towers fail you will still have cell servie at home.

Thanks everyone,
I know our Radio Shack is dying, so first I will check if they are dead yet, then see what att has to offer. I was surprised to find that a friend I talk with all the time in Idaho is on voip, but I'm guessing I might need to upgrade to the priciest internet on VI for it to work here, If anyone is using it successfully here I'd love the details.

Magic Jack works pretty good for me, just $36/year. It's good to have a back up just in case.

Thanks Bombi,
What internet connection are you using with it. I have choice & it can be slow, so maybe I would need to switch for good Majick jack quality

I have the basic "Broadband" Vi service. $49.95/month. It works almost always. The signal is usually free of static and space noise. I can use MJ on my iphone with wifi too.

I've been using a magicJack with Broadband VI's basic service for several years on STX. There will be dropout at times. But it's better than no phone at all.

I checked amazon & was a bit creeped out by all the fine print on some of the signal boosters. If I can get enough signal to spend 20 min talking to ATT I will try to see if the 1 I have in mind gets their approval. Meanwhile more info from anyone who has had success would be helpful.

Best to check Radio Shack for local expertise. The one on St Thomas always answers my questions honestly.

At least Radio Shack VI isn't plagued with fake reviews, lol.
