They're at it again! Just a quick note to advise you late night clubbers that the muggers are out working downtown and the Government Parking Lot in Christiansted. A young female leaving Davey Jones Locker was apparently followed to the Government Parking Lot late last night/early this morning. The mugger actually got into her car and demanded she drive him somewhere. When she refused, he bashed her in the face and stole her wallet. In a possibly related incident at roughly the same time, shots were discharged near the government lot behind the Holger Dansk Hotel. A police report was subsequently filed immediately afterward, but we all know that rarely results in any action or enhanced patrols. Please be warned and warn your young bar hoppers also.

A young female alone at night. Not really a bright idea.

THAT was not the whole story to that situation! Yes, she did get beat-up but, there's more to the story than what's on here. When ones looking for trouble, trouble follows...

Two people were seen arguing in that lot the other night, and one of the arguers (a man) fired a shot in the direction of two restaurant workers who came upon the scene. I was told this by restaurant worker.

Why does our society just accept the fact that it's not a good idea for a woman to walk around alone at night? Sure, it's unsafe, and we shouldn't do it, given the way our society is, but does that mean we shouldn't try to make our home safer? Wouldn't it be nice to live in a place where it's perfectly safe for anyone to walk around alone? Stop blaming the victim.

In the government parking lot no less.

Every time a thread is started about crime in the islands, what are some of the first things we all jump in and say?

1. Aren't there areas in your hometown where you wouldn't go alone at night?
2. Don't be in areas, late at night, where you shouldn't be, and you'll be fine.
3. Just don't do stupid stuff. Use common sense!
4. Stay away from gangs and drugs and don't get drunk and wander into the wrong area. (NOT saying the lady was/did...I don't know.)
5. Be aware of your surroundings.

Etc., etc.

Yes, it's a shame that a person isn't safe anywhere they want to be at any hour of the day or night, but unfortunately that's not the case here, or anywhere else. That's not blaming the victim. It may be accusing the victim of not using good common sense. Hopefully her injuries aren't too serious, and she won't find herself in that type of situation again. And hopefully, it may cause others to think more about what they are doing.

Does anyone know her? Is she OK?

Still blaming the victim Juanita. It would be funny to see you become a victim.

Would it really? I would never, ever consider it funny for someone to be a victim, even someone I don't know, who maybe was in the wrong place, at the wrong time. But, if that's your style, well, you entitled to your opinion.

Davey Jones Locker is where Indies used to be.

Back when the Casbah was there on Strand street, Roger used to hire security guards to watch Government Lot. I think Zebos did that for a while too. The Police need to post snipers with NVGs at each end of government lot.

Yep it is funny - to watch you cry about how your a victim when you blame victims for the circumstances - no less here than in a government parking lot in the middle of the biggest city on STX.

She was NOT wrong for being where she was.

I want to talk more about this. You know, NONE of the people I victimized were responsible for what happened. They just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.In absolutely no way were they responsible for what I did.

Here, with this woman, we are not talking about her walking around in the projects. We are talking about her being in a major government center where she was taken advantage of, in her car and she has ZERO responsibility for what happened.

//haven't been in trouble for more than 20 years, I am reformed

Crime happens at all hours of the day and night, in all sorts of places. Yes, it tends to happen more often to young women who are alone at night, but that doesn't mean that you're perfectly safe otherwise. Serious crimes have happened in daylight hours at restaurants we all love, outdoor recreation areas we all love, etc. Should we just avoid everything and hide under our beds forever?

Wouldn't it be better to build layers of security into our society? In the short term, that would mean increased police presence, better lighting, improved security, etc. In the long term, it means better education so fewer adolescents turn to a life of crime, more activities for people who might otherwise seek entertainment through drug use, etc.

This is what I mean when I say that we need to focus on how our society operates. Yes, until things improve, it's a bad idea to walk around alone at night, but why not try to change our society (not just STX, but anywhere) so that it's no longer an issue?

Wait a minute...nobody is focusing on THIS post, just the one saying it wasn't a good idea. Well.....it's NOT a good idea. I don't know a thing about what happened, or why, but it sounds like there is a little more to the story.

I'm still not saying she was to "blame", but maybe she wasn't the innocent victim, either.

roadrunner, I hear you about the ills of society, and I agree with you. Change is the answer! Honestly, and realistically, I'm afraid it's a long, long road, with too few people willing to take the steps. I'm old enough to remember when it was SAFE to walk around at night, even for kids and young ladies. It makes me sick that my kids and my granddaughter can't have the same freedom I had because there are thugs on the prey. But unless, and until, there is a big improvement, I will continue to recommend that anyone, male or female, be very thoughtful of where they put themselves and in what condition.

That seems to irritate noOne, but...c'est la vie! (edited to correct the spelling....I knew that didn't look right!)

Fortunately, on STX, and most other places, it's STILL possible to go out and enjoy a night on the town with friends and get home safely.

The story on the radio this morning was that there were two incidents.
First at around 2am where a gunman tried to rob a woman in a car in govt. lot (he was outside the drivers window) and she screamed and he took off.
Second was about an hour later again in govt. lot where the gunman followed a woman to her car, got in the back seat, tried to force her out of the car, hit her with the gun and stole wallet & cell phone.

Where were the cops after the first incident took place? If there had of been some kind of on-scene presence it may have prevented the second incident from occurring in the same place.

2 am in a near-deserted downtown parking lot.
then 3 am in the same near-deserted downtown parking lot.

It's awful, but I can't help but wonder what women their right mind goes unescorted in a parking lot at 2 am and 3 am.
Makes me wonder what she was doing there.

I'm sorry Neil, but I agree with you. Not "blaming the victim" but the crime statistics are what they are. They are bad. If they were working late at a bar and needed to go home late, get someone or a few to walk you to your car. Park closer. Get someone to go get your car for you. I would have to be in dire circumstances to be walking in downtown C'sted in the middle of the night. I would NOT do it after drinking at a bar. I wouldn't do it here in CA either, for the record. Statistics are made up of real people. Don't set yourself up to be one is all.
