Long weekend trips from St. Croix?

What are some inexpensive long weekend trips (3-4 days) from St. Croix that people recommend?

Nothing specific in mind -- scuba, snorkeling, hiking, yoga retreat, whatever -- just looking for recommendations from the experts.

It may be that there are none as the expense of travel mandates a longer trip.

Recommendations for people who live / stay long-term on St. Croix. So I guess "on what to do once here."

tan tan tour. most people rave about them and the guy that runs it is super nice. there are some nice snorkel/dive boats downtown. i have only been on one, they took us out to buck island and you got to snorkel for a bit. then you got to hang out on buck island for a bit.
beach/drink/eat. there is the mango melee july 6th if you are here for that. one saturday a month there is a free movie down at the fort. i think the last one. there is also jazz on certain fridays downtown.
check out gotostcroix for a calendar of events

Did you mean things to do on STX or trips to other islands?

I meant trips to other islands. Like, ok I've been on St. Croix for 6 months, a year, and now I need a little vacation. What's relatively inexpensive / gives a different experience?

Check Liat for weekend deals. They used to offer (likely still do) packages which fly you to two or three different islands in the chain for one reasonable price so you get a taste of several. You can take Seaborne to Virgin Gorda to enjoy the Baths; fly into St Thomas for a couple of nights and take a day charter/ferries to other BVI spots, or just stay on St Thomas and pop over for a day trip to St John.

Take the sea plane to STT then taxi to Redhook, Redhook ferry to STJ for their 4th of July Carnival. Highly recommend!!! But, just about any day trip over there is worth the trip to STJ to me.

I'm not sure that a trip to STJ or the BVI from STX would be considered inexpensive for many?.

We used to go to STJ to visit friends .....just to get there it runs about $270 from STX for the seaplane, taxi to Red Hook and ferry to Cruz Bay, for 2. Then you probably need a car at about $100+ per day, includes CDW. Then a place to stay if you can't stay with friends. And, if you decide to eat or drink while you are there, figure another $200.

So, by the time you done going for a weekend, it will take $500-700 depending on your style of accomodations.

The same is true for BVI, Vieques or San Juan....it isn't inexpensive taking weekend trips.

Last year, we took a 'weekend' trip(3 days) to St. Barts and it ended up costing us nearly $1500. It was nice but it wasn't worth it.

We went to Vieques last year for a few days.
Great getaway. Cape Air was only $69 each way. The place we stayed at was right on the Ocean. They gave us a local discount also. I think we paid $130 a night, low season. Car rental was a little expensive there. Food was very reasonable.

OP has brought up an interesting point - one that many people contemplating relocating to the Caribbean often overlook. Namely, what to do or where to go once you've exhausted driving the same roads, going to the same few places and seeing the same sights day in/day out on what really is a vary small island.

It's not always easy or inexpensive to get to/from different islands and overnight accommodations aren't necessarily cheap either.

Obviously, for someone living in the USVI's the first choices long weekend trips would be the other VI's, the BVI's and Puerto Rico and the Spanish Virgins. Once you visit those the treks become more time consuming and thus more costly.

One first has to define what he/she means by inexpensive, especial;y when traveling from St. Croix as almost all places will require airfare. Also, would OP be satisfied staying in a guest house or does he/she need/want accommodations more like a full service resort. Travel dates will also have an effect on one's budget. If traveling during High Season one could expect to pay high room rates, even at those places that offer special prices for "local discounts".

Unfortunately going away for a long weekend is not as simple as jumping in your car and driving a couple of hours -t will almost always entail a flight or two and perhaps a ferry ride or two.

Dante, we stayed at the Evamer.
Our favorite place to eat was Chicken King. Cheap and really good food.

STT, STJ, WI, Jost, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Culebra, Vieques, Rincon, PR, all great places to visit.
Some are easier to get to than others so if you only have a long weekend - 3-4 days max., it may be easier to stay closer to home and visit STT. If you have a rental car, you can take over to STJ to spend the day exploring that Island (make sure the rental car company allows their cars to be taken on barge) and explore STT. If you have longer and can deal with the weird ferry schedules to BVI, then go for it. You can check on www.vrbo.com or www.flipkey (just 2 of the many vacation websites) to see rates. Or log on to a home page for the island you are interested in. There are tons of places to stay to choose from, depends on your budget.

There's always Buck island/STX for the day!
The nice thing about STT is that it's a much closer jumping off point for travel to different islands.

There's also St. Maarten, Anguilla, and St. Kitts/Nevis but fares run in the $300 range.

Come to STT. $16 rt passenger to STJ, 80 to VG baths which are really beautiful (once), and ferry to Jost to soggy dollar for painkillers. There's SO MUCH to do here and you'll fill up a week fast!

I've been here coming up on a year and half and I STILL haven't been to all the beaches here yet! I don't know how anyone could get sick of these islands.

Old San Juan for a culinary/cultural getaway. Tour the forts. Stay at The Gallery Inn ( http://www.thegalleryinn.com/)

PS. This is not necessarily an inexpensive getaway but certainly a good one!
