This is nothing new! The concept has been around for a very long time.

I remember 70 years ago on very hot days my father would put a block of ice in front of a small fan and we'd all sit around the table taking in the cool air. He told me he learned to do that from his father.

How much does that fan cost? It wasn't part of the $8.00 estimate. How long do those water bottles stay frozen and how often do you have to refreeze them? He's not using it in Caribbean heat either.

I've been around a long time and know it's nothing new. I thought it might be of interest to someone on a tight budget who would love to have a cool room during the summer doldrums without spending an arm and a leg ...

Don't waste your time or your money. I actually tried this within the last year. It does not work at all. I tried different configurations of frozen water jugs, bottles and whatever. Nothing worked. It wouldn't even cool a room the size of a small bathroom. The air coming out was not much different than ambient temperature. I let it go for hours at a time with no change or improvement.

If that thing actually worked wouldn't everyone have one? How much electric will you waste trying it out? Don't waste your time and money.

I'm going to crawl back into my hole and remind myself (for the umpteenth time) to never again even think of introducing a little fun and levity into the mix.

As far as, "If that thing actually worked wouldn't everyone have one?" is concerned, the answer would be no because so many regard it as way too much trouble. Too many wouldn't even know how to use even a simple template and a kitchen knife, too many want to argue about the price of the little fan and the amount of electricity it uses and those too many would rather just flip a switch or push a button on a battery-charged remote to get cool air on demand. Lighten up you Debbie-Goes-Downers ... your consistent negativity will lead you to be etched with grumpy lines and a miserable early grave way before your time! 😀

If nothing else you are predictable. I know where you can put a frozen bottle of water for immediate relief.

You know, James, you really should consider going for counseling to overcome the obsessive disrespect and unveiled dislike you have for the islands and their inhabitants. I would have thought that once you left you would quickly settle back into life back home and put things into perspective but it seems you feel compelled to return to this forum to spew your invectives at every opportunity. Do get some help - you're too young and life is too short to wallow in such a pit of destructive and obsessive negativity.

With all due respect OT. Sometimes your posts come off as a bit, how should I say...short. So for you to say the above is kinda how other people might feel when you post.

Back on the topic, when ever you open your freezer or put something in your freezer that is not frozen, the compressor kicks on. The initial surge of energy used by the compressor is very high and if it stays on while trying to freeze a water bottle, will continue to consume energy.

Home Depot has a misting fan called the Artcic cool I think that sits on top of a 5 gallon bucket and runs off an 18V Ryobi battery. I know the humidity here makes this a little less effective, but nonetheless would probably be more effective than the original post.

Hey OT! You asked for it as usual. Maybe you should seek help or double your dosage!

James T gave his opinion as you gave yours. That's all. You're just trying to antagonize like always.

P.S. Have you looked in the mirror lately?

As always, Sausage, your words are a joy to savor!

In an old English churchyard is a tombstone bearing the words, "If Wind There Be/Let Wind Go Free/For Wind It Were The Death Of Me."

May your wind be forever free. 😀

As always, Old, As soon as someone disagrees with you, you feel it necessary to respond with a flurry of insults and antagonistic remarks until someone who falls victim to your BS gets kicked off. Maybe it's about time you got kicked off this board. I'll bet I'm not the only one who feels that way. As a matter of fact I know I'm not.

Just going to re-post what I said originally as it may have gotten lost in the "whatever it is that goes on here" just happened again.

This does not work, not even a little bit. I wasted my time and money to try it out. Please don't waste yours.

When AC went down in FL (a more oppressively hot place than VI in summer) I set a collandar full of ice cubes in front of a fan & it did make a difference. Makes me suspect this may work better than some folks say it does.

Go for it! Internet claims are always more truthful than those that have tried it in a practical application. This will revolutionize the A/C industry. It may put them all out of business! This is amazing! But wait, there's more. If you build one useless cooler with holes and a fan with ice inside you'll get..... Nothing. But super fun, waste your time nothing.

But probably not cost effective to operate unless one has a free supply of frozen water bottles.

I have one made by a friend out of a 5 gal bucket from Home Depot, Fan and PVC pipes. (4 holes with the pip pointing forward, 2 straight, 2cured pipes)
I put a gallon of frozen water in it on hot nights and it blows right next to my bed and cools enough for me to get to sleep. Fan fits perfectly in the top lid and you can fit a styrofoam container inside for the gallon of solid ice to last longer. In the morning, just pour out the water sitting in the bottom of bucket. It's my favorite nighttime fan. I sleep under three. My hubby calls it my windtunnel.

Another use for those awesome HD buckets! I use them as planters for veggies - very inexpensive, easy to schlep around when necessary and great as storage containers for a multitude of stuff with those nice tight-fitting lids. 😀
