More Q's: Which island?

Surfing the net isn't providing enough feedback for me on what characterizes each island...

I understand that people do live/commute for work btw St. Thomas and St. John. Is this accurate? If so, is the commute difficult / costly / worth it...?

Depending on where you live, could you please highlight some characteristics of your island and what separates it from the others?

Thanks again to all who respond - it has been very helpful.

moving, with all due respect, please take a reading journey through the posts on this Relocation Message Board. There are a lot of answers to questions that you've asked as well as answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet. In doing so, you'll get the feel of the differences between the islands. I appreciate your enthusiasm and wish you the best in your decisions.

Hi moving. Have you visited here much? You should.
What appeals to one person might not appeal to you.

I have not, but will be arriving for a visit in a two weeks. As much as I would love to believe that the information gained in seven days will be sufficient time to make a major life decision, it probably won't be. And considering I do not have the ability to fly back and forth for multiple trips, I really need to reach out here.

The bottom line is, I guess I will just have to visit the islands and see whether or not I like it and go from there.

moving: Okay, let us ask YOU some questions!;) What is leading you to come to the VI ? You haven't been here, but there is SOME reason you are interested...What work do you expect to do or are you a trust fund baby?

I chose STX over STT because I dislike crowds. STJ is out of my price range.

First of all, Edward, thank you for your answer.

Second,

moving: Okay, let us ask YOU some questions!;) What is leading you to come to the VI ? You haven't been here, but there is SOME reason you are interested...What work do you expect to do or are you a trust fund baby?

Okay, okay... perhaps I was a bit over-zealous in my current interest in the Virgin Islands, and I am admittedly "green" when it comes to anything about the VI. And therefore I can see how you may be thinking, "what is the driving force for this woman to relocate?" I also now understand that in such a preemptive stage, it may be better to observe this message board rather than dive right in. I didn't figure that a relocating forum would have quite so many regulars...

Regardless, to answer your question - I am, in fact, researching more than one location right now. Why the VI, amidst my other options? Quite simply, just because. Basically, I am seeking a fresh challenge in my life, I thrive on my environment for inspiration and I have found the Caribbean to be very beautiful, I think that because it is a US territory and predominately English speaking it may be an easier transition, I hate the winter, I work in the hospitality industry as an Event Planner with over ten years experience in waitressing, bartending, managing and sales, and right now, I have the opportunity to leave (no children, no mortgage, no credit card bills, etc). For those of you who may suggest I check out San Diego or someplace on the continent, don't worry... I am. I am also considering outside of the US entirely.

I must admit, the responses that I have been receiving have been awesome in helping me, not only to learn a little bit more about the Virgin Islands, but also to understand a little bit better what it is I am even looking for. So, to all I say thank you.

OK, so you have been to the Caribbean, just not the USVI, and you are in hospitality... Lots of fellow travelers here, then. Many of us moved here for just such reasons. Still, your scouting trip should include stuff like: find and go to grocery stores and banks, look at apartments, talk to people about work and life here. Best of luck with your research!

USVI, HI, Guam, American Samoa no work permit required. In your field that needs to be considered. No passport for these either.
Island life is not for everybody, cabin fever, island queer, what ever you call it, or "what'ya mean you don't have this-or-that sauce, or some frufru cheese", island life ya gotta love it.
I like flat land so STX, SW end is ideal. falling down after Happy Hour is generally easier on you on flat land than falling down hill or worse yet falling uphill then rolling down hill. But gotta love them Happy Hours. Anyway, all hours on an island should be happy hours!
Cheers!

eagleray: I had a friend who moved to St Thomas, felt claustrophobic the whole time she was here. She moved to St Croix and was ecstatic because of the wide open spaces.

Don't forget Puerto Rico. I have been here almost 3 years and still don't speak Spanish unfortunately.

I prefer STT. Live in a quite northside locale, enjoy crowds on occasion, but most of all love the multi-island views and ease of hopping to STJ or the BVIs. But STX is lovely too. STJ.... sigh... to0 expensive.
