We own a full service upholstery shop here in the states.  We would like to relocate it to St. Thomas and wanted to get a feel for wheither or not there is a need for a service of this type.  There are two divisions to our business residential/commercial and marine.  If folks on this forum would offer their opinions and insights we would be most appreciative.

I'm not on St Thomas but I know the upholstery shop in Gallows Bay on St Croix is always very, very busy and has been for many years.

If you do good work, word will get around the island quickly.

Go for it!

Thank for your encouragement!  Actually, our family business has been upholsering for 70 years.  My father is 87 and is still working in our shop.  If the good Lord will allow him to stay a little longer on this earth he will be making the move with us.

If you’re good at what you do, customers will find you.  Sounds like you are, just be ready for island life, moves at a more relaxed pace.  Best of luck.

From the research we have been able to do from online we don't see an upholstery shop on St Thomas.  Is that correct?

Definitely not...I see them almost everyday! Gallows Bay Upholstery right behind Caribbean Printing.

On St. Thomas, most upholstery businesses are kind of "shade tree" deals. Someone works out of their house or a small workshop. You find them by word of mouth. You might also ask some of the better furniture stores- Silk Greenery and Island Empire, for example.

There are a few small scale upholstery businesses in STT as East Ender mentioned. I've found it often more expensive to replace cushion covers than buy a new living room set.

Shade Tree business is a cool term as I am sure there are a lot of them there☺. Trees that is!   Obviously living in Michigan we couldn't do that so we are very use to having a building.  We are very excited about our site visit in a few months to actually see how we can implement a business that would be of assistance to the island.  How great it would be for someone to have something upholstered and not have to pay shipping fees for new furniture.

The VI Small Business Development Center should be your first stop when considering opening a business in the Virgin Islands.

We have been exploring that site.  When we come in May we would like to meet with someone in that department.  Do you know of someone we should ask specifically for?

Steen Stovall, the associate director. He works on STT. I suggest contacting him now.

Hi, I have my own business selling toys. We recently moved to the states and used the services of http://vanguardvanlines.com/ companies to move. This company delivered our items quickly and carefully. We were satisfied, as this company saved us from stress and worries during the move. So good luck with your move!

Thank you for the information.  We have developed a three ring binder to compile all the information needed to make this great move.  I will add the Vanguard company to our list.
