People have been quite helpful on the thread and via direct messaging. I look forward to joining this welcoming USVI community.

When my rental house tenants moved here with their 2 humongous Great Danes a few years ago, they were relocating due to their job.
The company paid for them to share a private plane that transported animals.

Is that an option for you?
Whether they would pay at least a portion of relocation fees?

Honestly, if there was absolutely no other way to get my dog to the VI or any other destinations, I'd be tempted to go the service dog route, than leave her behind or give her up.
That's only if I'd exhausted ALL other options. I'd probably end up paying to transport her, tho even if it cost a bundle.

Let us know how you fare.

STX Animal Shelter also transports dogs to stateside rescues so contact them as well to see if they have any incoming flights within your relocation timeframe.

Can't remember the name of the STX shelter but someone on this forum should be able to provide that info.

I have offered to share a private plane with the OP. The cost would be $7K each. If you look at the above posts, the OP thinks this option is too expensive.

It would be too expensive for me, too, Gators Mom but if it was the only option....

If you're gonna get stuck paying the full amount why don't you see what's affordable for kdberry and cut a deal.
Beats paying full price on your own.

My dogs are small - under the seaters. I will take my dogs and cats with me into the cabin on the plane out of Ft. Lauderdale. Spirit extra wide seats will be my first choice since weight limit isn't as strict as on American. It will take a couple of trips. I have friends on standby.

It would be so much easier to fly from St. Pete privately though. Practically door to door. But $14K is a bit steep even factoring the adventure of it all.

But yes, willing to negotiate some. I love to negotiate. Seems kd got hung up on the money and lost focus on the end goal of getting puppy to STX.

Just reading that I lost focus on the end goal of getting him there makes me sob and I generally am not an emotional person. I actually have been only sleeping 3-4 hours a night because I am up frettting worrying about my dog. If I were financially better off, I would pay any amount of money. I guess many of the people on this listserv are well-off so $4800 seems like nothing to them, but I work for a nonprofit so it’s huge for me and $7k is impossible.

I don’t even know why I feel the need to share all of that. I came back here to tell everyone that as of June 18th, United Airlines has a new pet travel option! I can get him to San Juan for about $600 and flights from their to St. Croix are very cheap.

Thanks to all of you offered useful suggestions and encouragement!

I have worked for non-profits for almost all of my career. I currently work for a non--profit as well. I will continue to work for that non-profit on STX. No trust fund here.

I am so happy you shared that United has a new pet plan - I'll check on that.

Great news!
And extremely helpful info for everyone with large pets and having to relocate during the heat of summer.

I don't think anyone of us is so wealthy that we can really afford to plop down significant money without feeling the "pain."

Sometimes, you may not have another option so its great you were able to find and provide one.

Let us know how it works out and all the best to you and your pup on the move and transition to island life.

You may wish to check flights between PR/STX tho as temperature on tarmac and size restrictions may still apply.

Is Seabourne seaplane still flying into STX? There are a couple smaller planes/airlines that fly into STX.

All of us animal lovers would be having high anxiety, stress and sleepless nights given your situation.
Thanks for sharing. It's difficult.

St. Croix Animal Welfare Center and Island Dog Rescue work together to transport dogs off island as does Pets With Wings.

Thankfully I have a right to my own opinion as do any of you who had a positive or negative comment. Thankfully you do not have the right to dictate where I may live or not live. Thankfully you have the right to do and say what you please with your own life just as I do. So try not to snatch them to the floor as you're clutching your perfect pearls:@)

Its people like you that ruin it for those that actually have a valid reason to have a support animal.

No wonder airlines are cracking down on this.

I bet you have a fake Handicap Permit too.

And its people like you that don't know how to enjoy island life because you're too busy being a troll and you can't win in a casino because you aren't good at betting:@)

More dishonest than disingenuous but it solves the issue (which is up to her to decide)

Indeed it is but lets be real, its all about the money. We consider our pets family that actually give us emotional support, but we are to treat them as cargo when its suits whomever. Uh oh wait "thats not fair" so again if there are loop holes use them but at your own risk:D

I thought a troll was someone who came to specifically cause trouble. Not long time posters. You are mad because people dont like that you think its okay to falsify a dogs status to get a cheaper way to get your pet to the islands. Seems like you need to get a grip. People who dont agree with you are not trolls.
If you have a problem with how airlines treat dogs, take it up with them. And not those who try to do things the right way and call you out for your disingenuous suggestions.

Bettybee, honestly don't understand why you're even commenting on the OP's post since you don't have a dog.

Good luck on your particular relocation.

Words of advice:
Island life is not for everyone.
Patience here is not a virtue, it's a necessity.
You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Be aware and careful how you treat and interact with people.
This ain't your stateside rodeo, darling, so be mindful and considerate......
