Musician's Community on STT?

Hi - My partner and I will be moving to STT in April, we are both in our late 40's. We are both amateur musicians, I play guitar and she plays fiddle and sings. Is there a good amateur musical community on the island? We are hoping that this will be a way for us to meet new people, make new friends, and play weekly. We are most interested in alt-country, american and bluegrass music but we are open to trying anything, either electric or acoustic.

Any replies are welcome and thanks!

Yes, there is an active music community, though it's kind of off and on. Someone commented recently that there's more music now than in recent years thanks to monthly jazz events. The bars on the East End generally play your music. Check Latitude 18.

Check out Tickles at Crown Bay Marina. They have an open mic nite.

If your partner plays fiddle and sings then definitely check out Latitude 18 as Dick Solberg (fiddler) and his Sun Mountain band usually play there during the winter and invite musicians to play with them. Winter time/high season has the most offerings of live music and things get pretty slow in off season/summer months. Hull Bay Hideaway usually has live music on weekends during season but haven't been down there, recently, so don't know if they are continuing the practice. Someone else on the board may know.

If you look in the Island trader which is a free weekly paper, they have a section that has a list of places that offer live music, who is playing, where and when. Best to call to confirm as sometimes their listing schedule can be off.

Check out Sapphire Bar and Grill on Sunday nights...there is a regular / varied band that plays there and always new people sitting in. Great place any time of the week:)

You will also find island events like "Oct Sunday" -- "Arts Alive at Tillets" - "Chili Cookoff" "Water IS. Festival" etc. that feature a wide and varied collection of different musicians - there is also a lot of music played at local homes at friendly get togethers where people bring instruments.

Wednesday is open mic night at Caribbean Saloon. Ask for Rob for sign up details.
