The only vacuum cleaner I could find was a cheap ineffective one at k mart. Does anyone have a recommendation of a better place to shop for a decent one? Thanks!

love my shark lift around portable - so light but sooo fierce!!!! I bought the extending wand and the floor head - great on hardwood or tile - even copes with my Great Pyr's dustballs - try online or see if there is a dealer in PR for source.
PS my daughter has the full size upright Shark - loves it!!! You can suck up tons before it even starts to lose suction.

I bought a used Eureka Mighty Mite on eBay a few years back, when it was harder to get such things shipped here. Been extremely happy with it. Check here; they have 'em used and new: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Vacuum-Cleaners-/20614/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=mighty+mite

So it sounds as if there is no place on the island?? We are headed down there tomorrow for a weeks stay in a vacation place we purchased and were hoping to purchase something while down there. Maybe it is not possible?

If you are on STT, Home Depot might have something, but I'd buy one and bring it down!

On STX we have a Kmart Kenmore, that has a lot of vacs, not sure if there is one on STT

My observation is that both K-Marts on STX do sell vacuum cleaners, just not really good ones. I bought a nice Hoover from WalMart (when they used to ship here). Good luck finding a good vacuum at K-Mart.

After my first Eureka canister vac finally caved in, I bought another. Finding the bags for the Eureka was often a chore. As with many other things here, I knew that if you need something all the time you're well advised to buy multiples and I scarfed up whatever I could find when they were available. Anyway, the second Eureka vac was finally falling apart after a couple of years, I couldn't find a next one and I found a Kenmore bagless vac at KMart on sale.

For the first six months it worked well but then the suction started to diminish even though I was meticulous about emptying the canister and cleaning the filter. Finally one day about a month ago I looked further. Obviously I hadn't properly read the instructions, had seen the little brush tucked in there but the fact that that little brush was tucked in there for good reason simply hadn't registered. DOH! The little brush was there because behind the main filter is another corrugated filter which the little brush is designed to clean. DOUBLE DOH!

I cleaned out so much crap dust from that corrugated filter with that little brush I'm surprised it actually kept working for as long as it did. It now works as well as it did when I first purchased it and (I have animals which of course multiply normal household accumulation) I now not only empty the canister after every vacuuming adventure but diligently clean out that back filter with that silly little brush. Lesson learned.

Buy a bag less vacuum with at least 10 amp motor and I prefer the canister type to get under beds, couches, etc..
I looked all over STT before I ordered from the states. Having 4 fur shedding dogs, I need something with powerful suction on tile floors that is easy to move from room to room and doesn't continually get caught up on rounding corners. I looked at Cost U Less, K-Mart, Electric Connection, Home Depot, etc. No Go for what I was looking for so the only option for me was to order. My first canister vac was so good that I wanted the same model but they no longer made it. If you get a vacuum with bags, they may not readily be available here in the future.

I use a shop vac for everything - a small one for carrying around and the big one on wheels for floors - also they are wet//dry use which is a real help on occasion.
They are available in many STT locations.

Not particularly relevant, but when the suction on one of my (now defunct) vacuum cleaners started to go, I opened it up to clean it. Out fell a nest of newborn baby mice. Needless to say they did not make it much further in development.

I guess it depends on how often you clean the vacuum!
I do it weekly. Poor mice!
Shop vacs do not suit my needs while it might suit others but I do not think they work particularly well in my environment.

I've always ordered bags online, but if you get stuck and run out of bags, it's possible to reuse them at least once, sometimes twice depending on how sturdy the bag is. Cut the seam at the non-hose end of the bag, empty it, and staple it back shut. You can even throw some duct tape over the staples if you really want to make sure it's sealed. Doing this can make one bag last three times as long.

Why waste money on bags, if you don't have to?

Because I hate cleaning, and I REALLY don't want to spend time on cleaning my cleaning devices! 😀

They are very easy to clean - just dump the dust out and rotate the built in cleaning tool, put it back together and your're done.
I'd prefer not to haave to hunt for the right bags or have to order them and conitnue to spend more money on something I already bought and paid for..but, it's your dime so enjoy.:D

Ha!

I have used only a shop vac for the past several years. I have a reducing adapter so I can use regular vac tools. Its so much better than a regular household vac.

As stated (7 years ago) the Eureka Might Mite w hepa filter is a great vacuum! Had mine for 16 years and it’s still going strong!

Still have the bagless Panasonic canister vacuum I ordered when I couldn't find what I wanted on STT. I did try other models but they just didn't make the grade for being light weight and powerful suction.

Still works great. Empty canister and take the filter outside to hose off and dry to clean.  Picks up fine dust, dog hair and can get under all furniture.
