Hi All,

My husband and I are moving to STT and we arrive on January 28th. I have checked the Community forum to see if there is anything in particular that may be coming up that we could attend in order to start meeting people. However, I haven't see anything. Is there anywhere in particular that we can go to meet others that live on the island? Any upcoming events that we could attend? We want to avoid going to any of the tourist attractions as we know that only people visiting will be going to those locations. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you!

What do you consider a tourist activity? If it's an excursion, locals will be doing the guiding.

There's some forum on January 30, I think, but I'm still waiting on the details.

My apologies, I wasn't very clear . . . was thinking more along the lines of restaurants that are more out-of-the-way and not as well known as the ones that draw in large crowds during the season. We are not against doing excursions that will include tourists, and do plan on going to different beaches, just really looking for some ideas on where we can go to meet others.

Hull Bay Hideaway, Sib's, Tap & Still (both locations, but lots of visitors go here, too), Kokopelli (though not as easy to mingle).

Contact the Chamber of Commerce to see when the next Business After Hours is. That's where you'll meet lots of locals.

Check http://www.stthomassource.com for activities, calendar of activities, community organizations, etc.

Not a fan of Kokopelli.
Money better spent elsewhere.

Hook, line and Sinker, Petite Pump Room.

Check this link.

Island Trader which is a free weekly advertising paper usually has a list of what's happening.

Here's another link.

This weekend there's the Bordeaux Festival.

Thank you, Alana! I had checked the Island Trader, but not vinow.com. I will definitely check there as well. We won't be able to make it to the Bordeaux Festival since we won't be there until the 28th. 🙁 But I am sure there will be other things to attend! I appreciate the responses!

The Women's Jogger Jam is January 31st. If you are a runner or walker, it is a great place to meet other women who are runners and walkers.

February 5th: Alice Hoffman will be here supporting her novel "The Marriage of Opposites", historical fiction about Camille Pissaro's mother who was born and raised here, as was he.

Welcome to St Thomas!

Kokopelli is popular with locals, and they have a bulletin board near bathroom where you can post events.

IMO restaurants are not the best place to meet people for networking, but that's what the poster asked for.

Volunteering at Humane Society, signing up for beach clean ups and other activities give you a better opportunity to network.

It's not even easy volunteering here for some organizations.

If you want to meet a certain type of person, you should attend all the fancy fundraisers that charge $75+ per person.

Even if you are not a walker/runner they usually need people to help with registration, etc. Is Fruit Bowl the sponsor? Information is online somewhere, but I can't remember where.

I think the Source has this covered.

Re: Jogger Jam, yes, the Fruit Bowl is the sponsor. It starts at 4:30pm there. Park across the street, as the parking lot is blocked off for the start/finish.

To the OP, advertising for a lot of activities pops up a week or two before they occur. You have to be vigilant and watch for things that interest you. This time of year is particularly busy.

Don't know OP's age but St. Thomas Sport and Social group has activities (more geared to younger folks)

If you have children Hull Bay on Mondays is great place to meet parents and let youngins run around with one another.

Thank you, to everyone for the information! We will definitely be looking out for these. We are in our late 40's and empty nesters, so we will not be bringing our children. We are very much looking forward to our arrival! I'm sure we will have more questions in the next couple of weeks and even after we get there. This forum has been a life saver!

I hope everyone has a good weekend!

There's also a Texas Society, and they sponsor the Chili Cook Off every year. I think they're on Facebook.

There's a list of non profit organizations in the beginning of the VI phone book that you can check to see if participating or volunteering with any might suits you.

Lucky Paws Foundation and Humane Society of STT always need volunteers. Many nice people, locals transplants and been here forevers. Definitely good causes.

The annual International Dinner at Antilles School is a great networking opportunity. This year it will be held on Sat, Jan 30 from 5:30 to 8. $20. At the MCM Center at Antilles School. "All You Can Eat Artisan Food From Around The World."

I was told to get there early if you like Indian food - that's the first to go!
