Does sargassum smell like rotten eggs?

Yes. A sulfur odor.

No rain producing the driest possible conditions on land and ugly rafts of sargassum at sea.
We had relatives visiting for the first time last week. Needless to say, very unimpressive. However, Cruzan Rum saved a couple days, and the north shore waters and beaches were still predominately clear.
In a few weeks the beaches will be cleared out, and the rain will fall again.
Then we can go back to just complaining about the government 😀

Use a couple of these tricks to get the smell out your nose: pop some smelling salts, smell some ammonia or vinegar in a sealed type area-huffing, use Vicks in your nostrils or right under them :d

If the smell is anything like what the Red Hook/STT area has endured, it's not easy to get used to the constant, pervasive stench.

Some of us in Princesse thought it was a sewage problem that we have a history with, til my husband was riding his bike to work in cotton valley & saw the huge chunk rotting there on the coast.

Could you ask him for the exact location? Last night was the first time the odor was noticeable in my house. I am just grateful not to be living on the southeast side or staying at the DiVi. I know their employees are trying, even using a backhoe but its too much. You can see waves of it out at sea with more coming ashore. I really felt bad for the few people staying there. The moment you open your car door in the parking lot the smell overcomes you. I know they are offering to bring guests to other beaches but by staying open, the long term damage to the resorts reputation is going to be irreversible.

Hopefully, none of beaches being impacted are turtle nesting grounds as peak nesting season for hawksbill and green turtles is getting under way.

He saw a lot from Cotton Valley but thinks that there must be a bigger one more to the west where the smell was worse

I can only speak for Sandy Point as I was there to watch the leatherback hatchlings through SEA a couple of weeks ago, and there was no sargassum there at all.

The smell was pretty strong at Mill Harbour. I grew up where a lot of people had sulpher water wells and that's what it reminds me of.

DPNR, EPA to Conduct Door to Door Survey on Sargassum Stench

BY SOURCE STAFF — JULY 28, 2015

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) will embark upon a joint effort with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to resolve the foul odor in the Red Hook area, according to a press release issued Tuesday by DPNR.
This effort will include, but will not be limited to, air and water sampling. On Wednesday, July 29, representatives from DPNR and EPA will canvass the Red Hook area to conduct surveys from residents and the business community who may have been impacted by this smell.

“If you see our team in the Red Hook area, take a few minutes and complete the survey. The more we know, the closer we can get to finally rectifying this awful situation once and for all,” Commissioner nominee Dawn L. Henry said.

- Maybe you guys in STX who are also being impacted should ask them to do same for you.

Conducting surveys is really going to be effective in removing the debris and odor. Way to go DPNR...spring into action!
