I was very concerned about Christopher Barry Mitchell being a sex offender

Get over it.

According to what I find online, the incident occurred in 1998 when he was 30 (he was born in 1968) with a child under the age of 16. So.....we don't know exactly what happened...but...that is a decent age difference....

If people are going to continue this conversation, it belongs under the coconut tree, not on the pickled greek thread which is what the poster intended to discuss.

I don't personally know Chris. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Anyone willing to give the benefit of doubt obviously has no kids.

Sorry, don't know the guy, and know nothing of the "situation". He may be nice, may be 100% rehabilitated, may have "done his time".

HOWEVER, the laws are there for a reason. If the law says you need to register - no matter how you feel you were wronged in your conviction [maybe you think age of consent should be 14? 10??], you need to register. If the law says that a convicted sex offender can't operate a business within 'x' feet of a school - then go somewhere else!

It seems pretty straightforward - like laws that [try to] keep guns out of convicted felons hands. Sure, the now-50 year old may not choose to rob a 7-11 again like he did when he was 19... but you'd still place the .45 in his hands just for fun?

Bringing up gun laws, here... as a support to an argument...

Brilliant(?)

I have a daughter and the same age as his. I would give him the benefit of the doubt in a second...and have many times.

According to the website linked above, Mr. Mitchell is a Tier I sex offender, who is registered in the Virgin Islands. Per DOJ definition below, he would no longer be required to register if he had not had the second arrest/conviction in FL for failure to register in 2008.

Tier I: misdemeanor registration offenses, child pornography possession, and any other sex offenses that do not support a higher classification. Tier I offenders must register for 15 years with annual in-person verification.

Seriously folks, this guy is one person. Who may or may not be serving you food. How many people do you think have sex offenses that they haven't been convicted of? How many of them work in the service industry? in restaurants? My guess is that you've been in contact with offenders more often than you think.

Having worked in child protection for a number of years, its not they guy who's been convicted who is the guy to watch out for, its all those who haven't who are more dangerous to your family. While you're fretting about this guy and his restaurant, where are your kids?

and dont forget, the majority of bad things that happen to your children are by friends or family members

I kinda wish this thread was locked and removed. The arguement about not having kids is moot. My 2 god daughters live just down the street from the place and I would have no problem taking them there. If anyone were to harm them they would end up in a fish pot after several days of Manson Family nasty, that being said..........

Trying someone in the court of public opinion especially with some of the comments in this thread is wrong. I understand the ideas behind the registry but I can also see why someone would fail to register. As several people have pointed out the offence is known but no details about what happened. By letter of the law a couple in high school could have a problem with a 2 yr age difference.
