Pastoral Counselors in USVI?

Hello! My family and I are considering moving to St. John. We have three small children and was wondering what would be the most economical (and safest) housing? From what I am gathering, housing is very expensive there. Also, I am an AACC/IBCC board certified pastoral counselor and was wondering if there is any demand for help in that field there? I do not know whether or not the USVI has a regulatory board for counselors or not. I am board certified (and ordained) but not state licensed (which can pose a problem in some states as they do not permit non-licensed pastoral counselors to practice.

What types of churches can be found in the USVI? Any Mennonite?

Thanks for your help and time as it is very much appreciated.

ok i've stopped laughing now and i honestly mean no offense to you, but have you checked the population levels for stj, there are like 2 people living over there, you have one of those jobs that most people cannot afford to use, you know like life coaches and massage thrapists and again i really mean not to offend but you'd probally be better off on an island that has a big population if you want to pursue that occupation

Econimcal and St John in no way shape or form go together, especially for a family of five. St John's permenant year round pop is between 2k to 5k people. You will not find a church large enough to support you on stj, maybe not on any of the islands.

Start reading everything you can on this board to get a idea of what it would be like living here for a family of five, the expenses, the challenges you will find. There is not a better resource out there to find information. Even the settler's handbook they sell on this website, will not give you as much information as reading through the threads on this board. You can always use the search feature to find things quicker.

I have to second what trw said you might want to think about doing something different on the island, but at the very least after your research if you still think you family is up for the move, do a pmv first (pre move visit) and try to live like a local not a tourist.

Hey trw..... the massage therapist comment.... Is that your belief in general, or only for St. John? Just curious because I am one lol

lol i know a few massage people over here and well like servers and anyone else that relies on tourism for the big part of our income,in slow season it can be tough to make ends meet, i thought the bob sledders were on jamacia, and once again i'm not trying to offend anyone, just being realistic,if we could just get some non stop flights from the upper east coast we'd might be a little better off. we all need to remember to remind the tourists that it is nicer here in august than pretty much anywhere in the states

trw, you're thinking about the movie. We really have a bob sled team, over on St. Thomas. They actually go to the winter Olympics. Somehow associated with Senor Pizza. It's fun to watch the opening ceremony and look for the tiny delegation from the VI.

As I understand it, the VI bobsled team that went to Calgary for the Qualifiers and then to Nagano in 98 was an embarassment, behavior-and attitude-wise. (These were the pizza guys). Made you not want to say you were from the usvi...Had nothing specifically to do with their skill, though being too busy partying to practice like every other team might have had some relation to their lack of skill as well...

And we have a skeleton racer too:

We have had more than one luge participant - also the VI has a silver medal, albeit in sailing, and ALL of our Olympic athletes are extremely proud to say they were from the USVI -----
and they have represented the VI very well over the years. The bobsled team did not exhibit embarrassing behavior.

wisener: To get back to your original questions...I don't know of any Mennonite Churches. There is licensing for counselors, usually they are psychologists or LCSWs. I have a feeling that pastoral care falls outside of their purview, and is unregulated.
