Pellet/BB Rifles

I have had some issues with a pack of neighborhood dogs recently. This weekend they attacked one of my small dogs and just about torn her apart. It was devastating.

I'd like to purchase a CO2 Air Rifle and related ammo to convince them that my yard and dogs are off limits. Its not my intention to kill them although I'd like to after what they did to my dog.

Does anyone have any info on the legality of bringing in pellet and BB guns in the territory?

Is a gun owners license required here for these small arms?

In most places there are no restrictions but the VI is so f**ked up, one never knows here.

Call your Humane Society on whichever island you are on to seek help/advice.
Not a good idea to be shooting animals. You may find yourself in trouble.
Can you find out who dogs belong to?
So sorry for your pup being hurt.

They are legal, and here on STX you can buy them in the stores.

I've considered a paint ball gun for similar purposes. Maybe not as accurate, but the owner of the intruding canine would certainly get the point. Probably less harm to the dog yet I hear they sting pretty good.

I'm probably going to approach the owner of the dogs for compensation on the vets bills.

Of course, they'll deny that their dogs were the culprits so thats going to go nowhere.

I've spoken to VI Cargo this AM and they say there are no restrictions on pellet or BB guns so I went on Amazon and bought a Winchester semi-automatic CO2 pellet gun and ammo.

When their dogs start coming home with lead in their ass, they'll get the message.

Come to think about it, those birds that have been crapping on my deck and car might make good target practice too.

Thanks for your input.

Really? You want to shoot the birds ? Maybe a car cover and a deck awning would be more realistic?

The paint ball idea sounds much better to mark the roaming dogs. Definitley gives you a visual ID.

If you own your own home, fence at least a portion of your property so your pet is safe in your yard. It's the only way to be sure they do not get attacked of attack someone elses pet.

I am not at all on board with the bb gun, neither for the dogs or the birds.
If you harm someone's animal, you could be the one in trouble, not the other way around.

Be careful using a BB gun. The police can view even these less than lethal air guns as a real gun. It's up to the responding officers to decide how to treat it. Ammonia works well against dogs. Get a dish soap bottle and add 50/50 ammonia and water. I have used this to break up dog fights. Please all large dog owners remember dogs in a pack revert to the wolf hunt and kill.

WOW. That's effing terrible of you dude. Don't take it out on the dogs- they're just being dogs. I'm sorry for your pup but that's absolutely unacceptable to go around causing pain to animals when YOU can go straight over and have a real conversation with the owner. If they refuse - trap the dogs and take them to the pound as a last resort.

I am also curious is your dog fenced or is he running loose also????? How did they get to him?

The dogs might not have owners.

And they might live + rent on an unfenced property?

Would you have been sorry for my kids when the dogs attacked them when they were 4 and 6, or for the dogs that we killed?

Ok...I won't use birds as target practice. But, if you saw what those f**kers did to my little dog, you'd be angry too.

Yes, there are a lot of dogs in the neighborhood that run loose including mine. But the others aren't ripping a small little dog to pieces.

I want revenge.

Put up a fence and have peace of mind.
Revenge does no one any good.
Have you considered the part you played in the attack on your dog by letting it run loose.
Did you expect nothing to ever happen?
Hard lesson to learn at your dogs expense.

One of the first things I did when I purchased my 2nd home that I now live in, was to fence in a quarter acre for the dogs on the 1 acre property. I had to go into debt to do that much but they are never off the property unless on a leash, getting into the truck to go to the vets. Stray/roaming dogs cannot gain access to them, either. Nor are they on the roadsides vulnerable to being run over by cars or people with rocks or sticks, being kidnapped to be used as fighting dog bait or considered abandoned if found on someone elses property.

Call the Humane Society. Call the police and file a report. Fence your yard in to ensure your pets safety.

Many years ago I had a pack of four dogs coming onto my property at night and, one night, they went after one of my cats. I heard the noise and ran outside to see them dragging her down the long driveway and it was only through sheer serendipity and my screaming that she managed to get away from them. I did "all the right things" but to no avail and they kept sneaking in night after night - yelling at them and throwing stones at them caused them to flee but in the meantime I was suffering from sleepless nights and in constant fear that one of the cats would get nailed.

I finally borrowed a pellet gun from a friend and sat in wait for them - and fired off at them as they ran down the driveway. There were a couple of yelps (I'd never before and have never since shot any sort of a gun so rather doubt I actually hit one of them) but I obviously scared the living daylights out of them and they never came back.

I don't need any lectures about hurting animals. I've rescued more animals in a lifetime than most people and continue to do so. Even tight fences won't keep them out - I've been there done that too - if they want to get in they'll dig and will. I lost a beautiful cat a few years later when two dogs dug their way under a gate in a fence in broad daylight. It was a ghastly experience and the poor cat was DOA at the vet.

You can work to protect the animals who live with you but unfortunately you sometimes have to resort to measures you don't find palatable. As far as "that's effing terrible" and, "don't take it out on the dogs" then just wait and see how you feel when it happens to you. I hope it never does.

Fencing in your own pet doesn't stop other dogs from using your yard and driveway as a toilet. Some of us don't even own dogs and get sick and tired of stepping in our neighbors dog shit.

We've been pretty tolerant, but have awoken to chewed up cushions, missing shoes, etc. I'm really close to the paint gun but having never used one I would be concerned regarding accuracy.

I understand you're pissed about your dog getting hurt and I would be bloody furious if it was my cat (but fortunately he's a NINJA, and is kept indoors at night). I'm not in favor of the pellet/bb gun approach, and please don't harm the birds. You can trim back the trees and string up some fishing line to stop them from perching above your car.

One more point. Those dogs that come into your yard may not belong to anybody. They could be strays. If you shoot them, there won't be anybody to take them to the vet and they'll just suffer. Not a good plan.

What about chickens? I have some chickens that would make great target practice.

If they are strays, then your shelter can trap them and humanely euthanize.

NOPE. It wouldn't ever nor has it ever happened to me. I do now and have ALWAYS kept MY animals either INSIDE or in a FENCED yard!!!!!! I am sorry for your dog but you are part of the problem if you left your dog out unfenced. What if YOUR dog had attacked a neighbors dog or a kid? Would it be OK to shoot your dog in the ass with a pellet gun then?

You have to have some personal accountability whether you like it or not.

I would love nothing more than to adopt a couple island dogs, but guess what?? I don't have a fenced in yard - SO I DONT. I put down my best friend of 17 years a few years ago and have been wanting another dog every since. I know my responsibilities as a pet owner and that is to keep them safe. Here I don't have a way to fence them in and do that.

If the dogs are unowned then as sad as it is you should trap and have them humanly put down as Alana suggested. They are likely already suffering already with starvation heartworm and disease not to mention breeding,

Very sadly I have had to deal with this recently too. A neighbor moved out of a house down the road and left their dog which was free roaming "neighborhood dog". New tenants moved in and the dog attacked and almost killed their dog. I mean literally their dog was almost dead. He proceeded to beat the neighborhood dog with a pipe until I threatened him that I would crack his effing skull with that pipe if he hit her again. Sadly I had to take her to the pound where after waiting and not being adopted, she was euthanized. It's TERRIBLE all the way around but sometimes as much as it kills me to say it, humane euthanasia is the only option. She was such a sweet dog but just very dog aggressive and has a terribly CRAPPY owner.

I won't reply again, this topic just gets me too worked up. I will gladly deal with WAPA hurricanes, bad service and shitty attitudes but I will say that the things that people on this island do to animals is CRIMINAL and makes me absolutely sick.

Sorry for all the edits. Powers out and on my cell in the dark trying to type.

WOW! I guess this is the brave new world. Is this what we consider important anymore? Anybody care about raising good moral children? Oh, But that is expensive and takes hard work. How about the state of the world after your selfish life is done? Really? If my dog is attacked on my property, I would shoot the trespassing aggressive animal in the head, throw it in the dumpster and not give it another thought.

cruelty to animals is the lowest form of cowardice. it's right down there with abusing defenseless children, just shows a greater symptom of psychological disorder.
are u kidding me. shooting pellets at birds, chickens and defenseless dogs. what's wrong with you people? come on guys.
some of my co workers tell me only the despots and rejects from the states come down here to live. maybe they right. come to think of it, I was a reject from the states. maybe they talking bout me.
