Hi,

I have been following the progress being made to restore power to STX.

We are planning on coming down in early January and I understand that on the east end that while power has been restored in some areas there is no internet nor reliable cell phone service as of yet even where the power is back.

Does anyone have knowledge about whether there are places to stay that have had their communications restored? Mostly I would need internet.

AT&T cell phone coverage seems to be over most of the island. BBVI seems to have most if not all of their internet towers operating now. Local Internet from BBVI towers mostly depends on power. There are also several free temporary? WIFI hot spots setup around the island. I'm sure there are plenty of places to stay that have Internet. Pelican Cove Condos has Internet.

Phone, TV, Internet from Viya cable is another matter. Have no idea if any of that service has been restored.

AT&T has gotten better on the east end, but still not as reliable, or as strong a signal, as pre-Maria.

Great news however,
I got electricity back tonight !!!
That in itself was a huge hurdle out here.

Not all BBVI towers are fully functional.
East side of mount welcome tower is completely down. Even though BBVI tools tell technicians it is up noone is connected to it or can connect to it. Im leaching off the northern part from union mount washington and its very up and down.

I assume other towers need similar repairs.

Thanks all. I guess I am not familiar with the various internet options- I assumed it was either cable or telephone (DSL). Is BBVI delivered in this manner or is it wireless based?

BBVI has towers in the hills and individuals getting Internet service mount a local antenna pointed line of site to a tower. If you don't have line of site to a tower you can't get service. So the signal is wireless to the individual customers which means no issues to deal with when poles come down. I don't know how they connect the towers but whatever it is it seems fairly reliable. BBVI was able to get several towers operations rather quickly after Maria.

I don't think there is any DSL here. The other option is cable and of course AT&T 4G. The AT&T 4G has been iffy.

Yea last update was over a month ago. I called to see if they had an estimated month for northside STT: they literally laughed. I went to ATT and way overpaid for the WiFi hotspot thing until Viya gets to us. It is what it is. I can only use it from 9-5 when towers aren’t overloaded but I am really thankful to be able to do some semblance of work. I am line of sight to peterborg ATT so that’s lucky.

This is a new page that was launched last week with maps indicating their various "nodes" and stage of restoration for each. There's even a feature for you to enter information from your billing statement that will reveal which node you're in, so that you can better track progress relevant to your specific area.
