Hello all,

Doing a PMV this May. Were staying on St Johns and looking for a good car rental. Any ideas?

Good afternoon,

Congrats on setting up your PMV. BTW, unless you're visiting Antigua, you'll be on St. John (no S).

How long do you plan to rent a car? Courtesy Car Rental is my favorite on St. John, but all of them have comparable prices.

I've used Varlack twice since moving to the island ( single day rentals) Good experience both times. I've heard St. John Car Rental is good as well, but I don't have any experience with them. Enjoy your visit, but be sure to pay attention to prices in the market, lines in the bank, lines at the post office....the "real life" things. I love it here, but it is very different living in STJ as opposed to spending a week drinking rum and hitting the beaches!

It would be best, and probably cheaper, for you to get a car at the airport on STT that will allow the car to go to st. john and then take the car barge over. This way you don't have to mess with a taxi and schlepping your luggage all around.

Out of curiosity, are you hoping to move to St. John, or St. Thomas?

Not sure yet. I love um both. I might be going to school in St Croix soon so that may be an option also.

@cheryl96s -- whether it's cheaper to rent in STT or not depends on how many people in your party. For only two people, the savings is insubstantial, if any. Plus, if you have any kind of problem on STJ and you rented from a company on STT, good luck with getting it taken care of quickly.

@jtbaylee, St. John Car Rental does have one advantage -- you can park in their lot for free when you come to town. But my experiences with their staff have not been nearly as pleasant as with Courtesy.

I am planning our PMV to SST in late March-early April for 3-4 weeks.....And was just "tossing it around in my head" why not start a "car-co op"? 1st in line purchases an agreed upon ride, use it thru your PMV, pass it along to #2, etc. etc. each pay an equal share of depreciation, sell it after the last in line, split the remains.... This may sound "far out" but we [HOPEFULLY] find responsible partners, maybe overlap weeks or days...and all save some $$$s Even if overlap occures, we all might not need a vehicle the same days??? ANY TAKERS??? Newt

Here's why not: Insurance, and the headaches that will ensue when (not if!) someone gets into a mash-up -- whether their fault or the other party's. Not to mention that someone will get stuck with an unfair portion of time spent on maintenance, even if the $ is all split equally.
