Apologies up front....I know this doesn't have anything to do with moving to the VI, but this is my "go to " place for info, so... My anti-virus is about to expire. I'm looking for recommendations for the best value, but really the BEST protection. Who do you recommend? Thanks!

A combination of AVG-free, Windows defender and Spybot. I've been using all three for more that ten years and never had a problem. AND they have grabbed viruses and shown them before trashing them. Best deal and all free!

A-vast is another free one that's highly recommended.

For home use PC, I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. I used to use AVG, and deal with their misleading popup ads to try to get you to buy the pay version. You don't get any of that with Security Essentials because Microsoft has a vested interest in trying to help customers without annoyances so they don't go to a different operating system.

Also, for periodic scans, I would recommend Malwarebytes. You just have to remember that before you run it that you need to click the update tab and let it search for the latest updated definitions. The reason they do it that way is so that it's not taxing your system while your not using it.

I work in IT and part of my job before was removing viruses, and I ended up writing an internal document on our process for malware extraction. I now watch our network traffic for signs of malicious behavior. We also use the corporate version of Security Essentials called Forefront, and our helpdesk and Desktop Support folks also use Malwarebytes for one off scans. There are other tools like those from the Sysinternals Suite but this forum probably isn't an easy place for me to explain how to use them.
