Question about flying with a cat

I am bringing my cat down to STT with me and have read that their is a chance they will make you take the cat out of the carrier to send the carrier through the xray machine. Has anyone flown out of JFK and gone through this? I just found out from one of our fellow board members that this happened to them flying out of DC. Oh boy, this is going to be awful with a timid cat that does not like to be held... (with sharp nails that I will now be trimming before we leave).

You have to take the pet out of the carrier, and carry it, while the carrier goes in the xray think with your luggage. Once you pass security you have to put them back in the carrier. I know its a pain in the neck. Make sure your cats nails will not tear the mesh window. My dog got me tossed off the plane in Charlotte on my way to NY. He just had his little head peaking out so he could see me. Never barked or made a peep. You need to have a health certificate within 10 days of flying. I have my vet give me some doggy downers. 2 for the dog, 4 for me

Yes you have to carry him/her through the xray machine with you and your carrier goes through on the belt.
A great all natural product you can give your pet is Rescue Remedy - please read the following link 🙂 You can find it at Wild Oats/grocery stores as well as ordering on line 🙂

I shared the same concern. We had a screener take the cat to a closed room to do the inspection.

Jeff,
What airport did you fly out of that allowed you to take kitty to separate room? Crossing my fingers that it was JFK - New York.... lol...

In my case i brought my dog on a doggy Carry bag i was lucky the TSA guy in Miami was real nice i did not take her out of the bag he look and said ok. On my case i took a AA jet from Miami to STT no american eagle my dog was fine all the way first in the Admiral club in miami they let me take her out to a little patio area where the employees smoke . My dog could go 7 hours without doing anything. If you have to stop in San Juan and you are taking American Eagle they wont allow you to take your dog even if is a small shitzu like mine in the cabin with you and if it is summer they wont allow you to put it in a kennel because is too hot. Now if you travel cape air from STT to San Juan you must buy an extra seat to take your to dog to San Juan they will allow that. In the trip from Miami - St thomas i was lucky also because i was able to upgrade to business class ( First Class) and the seat next to me was empty and the flight attendants they allow me to take my dog out no problem when i arrive to st thomas nobody check anything the dog was with me all the time i was able to get out of the plane walk out of the terminal to the little grass there she did her business when back to get my luggage when straight home.

One of my dogs, who is rather nervous, escaped in Miami airport when TSA opened the crate to inspect it. He ran past about 20 people who all appeared to be scared of him, until finally someone called to him nicely and caught him. I'm sure a cat would be even harder to catch, so don't presume TSA are experienced animal handlers!

Just explain to TSA the cat attitude; take along a towel to wrap the cat in. TSA will let you carry your cat through screening. The towel works for us everytime.
