Relocating in April-May

My husband and I are relocating to the island in a few months. My husband is a Auto Mechanic, and I am a CNA, and Medical Assistant. It will be just us two, as we don't have any children yet. We are planning to port our car and a few personal items. I also have done major research in reference to this move. We aren't expecting anything, we are aware of the islands paradise along with it's "warts". We are easily able to adapt. I have lived on a small island for a while and was able to adapt without any major problems. I do admit it was a culture shock at the beginning, but I made it and loved it. We also know, that living here, is nothing like vacationing.

We are planning to move to St. Croix, not sure which side as of yet.

What there any nearby nursing homes, hospital that hires CNA's , or home health care that hires CNA's?

Where do I go about getting my license for there?

My husband is open to working else where, as I was told that auto mechanic jobs may be hard to come by.

We are also planning to get our bar-tending license before moving as well.

I also was told, that it may be very difficult to obtain an apartment and job before arriving, so our financial will be prepared for that. Although, I am hoping and praying that may change.

Thanks

You don't want to get into a lease without a physical inspection first and it sounds like you're not sure where you want to be yet anyway. Either do a PMV just before final move to arrange for lease or plan to stay short term at a guest house first like Villa Morales or vacation rental. Lining up a job in advance other than perhaps professional or medical field isn't likely to happen either. Not sure about CNA license but DLCA http://dlca.vi.gov/ should be able to help steer you with that.

There is only one hospital on St Croix: http://jflusvi.org/about.aspx
I can't help you with medical practices, but if you go go for a pre-move visit, you will quickly get the idea. I don't know about home health over there since Seaview stopped, but there is a home hospice, Continuum Care.

On the other hand, if you want to consider St Thomas... The hospital is Schneider http://www.rlshospital.org/Home.aspx. There is Premiere Home Health and Continuum Home Hospice. Many medical practices. Then there are the government agencies such as Health and Human Services which may have jobs.:-)

I do not know about CNA licenses, but I suspect they would be under the nursing licensure board, which is department of health.

your husband is an auto mechanic, there are i think 2 car dealerships and a few small places. the major auto place burned this morning.

Could he get his business license and work on his own?

there is a clinic in frederiksted and also an urgent care facility right by the hospital.

there are also a lot of dr's , maybe getting a job with one of them?

Okay, I learned today that Dr. Bacot started a home health agency on St Croix. I don't know the name, but at least there is one...

Study up on Zirka Mike, it has been around since 1946 or so. The area in Brazil where most of those babies were born was sprayed by the government the year or so before with a insect repellent to kill mosquitoes. It got into their water supply. Many doctor now think that this was the cause.
Of course you don't hear much about that as the big drug companies are coming out with a vaccine to keep you from getting Zirka, and that will be worth billions.

zike does have to propensity to cause the birth defect, a very small percentage of babies born outside of brazil have had any birth defects.

you still need to be vigilant because we also have dengue-which can kill.

Should you end up on STT your husband should read this first. Stay away from Caribbean Auto Mart. This is just one story.

I also think reading the thread suggested above would be good for her husband. but I don't see any reason in the thread for him to avoid CAM if he is here looking for work.
We only ever read one side of a very disgruntled posters problems over longer than a year. and that poster never posted again and had little support from the forum or anyone commiserating with his supposed difficulties.

They're other dealerships on island he can check into.
Community Motors, Toyota, John's Auto, etc.

You might wish to call DLCA/Dept. of Licensing and Consumer Affairs regarding nursing licensing requirements. http://dlca.vi.gov

Sorry, the dealerships I mentioned were on STT, not STX.

I know him personally and he got a raw deal. They have a constant turnover because they continue to screw over employees. They expected Highlander to LIE on a federal document and declare the tools were worth under $2500.00 so they didn't have to pay customs fees. They also expected him to ship all his tools uninsured. CAM is slime so if the OP's husband enjoys getting screwed over then by all means go for it.
