Greetings!

I finally received the green light to relocate to St. Croix! Yay!!! I've been researching since mid year 2016, and applied for jobs October 2016. It has taken a while but good things come to those who wait right? LOL. anyway.....I've gone over the topics above several times but I just would like to hear from some actual people who have made the move on what to expect. I visited St Thomas and St. Johns last August but I didn't have a chance to make it to St. Croix. Also at the time I had only applied for jobs in St. Thomas. Since landing a job in St. Croix, I will be coming site unseen, however, St Thomas and St Johns were nice so I'm sure I won't have any problems with St. Croix. I already know I like the fact that it is not as hilly as St. Thomas. I'm already accustomed to driving on the left hand side of the road because I'm presently living in the Bahamas and I've been driving over here for the past 6 years. I live on a very remote Island over here so I'm very familiar with living with limited supplies and adjusting to island life. When I relocated to the Bahamas from the states everything was taken care of for me, like shipping my goods and housing, cable, internet and food were supplied for me (military base). This move, I will pretty much be on my own so I need a little help. I report to my job April 1st so I would like to get there a week to two weeks early to become familiar and to get adjusted to my new home.

My main concerns are of course housing, and shipping my vehicle and personal items. I'm really not planning on bringing alot, just personal affects. Any info anyone can provide will be much appreciated.

Linda

So you'll need a place to stay and the first recommendation is always never sign into a lease or put up any money until you have seen the place. Find someplace you can stay short term when you first get there. A vacation rental would be the simplest short term option if you can afford it. There is also Villa Morales guest house if you are on a really tight budget. You are lucky that you know where you will be working so you can start looking for convenient options for short term and long term. You may need a short term car rental as well. Lot's of good recent information in here on transporting a car, getting it inspected and registered and insured. If you are shipping from the Bahamas that may add an extra twist.

"St Thomas and St John were nice so I'm sure I won't have any problems with St. Croix."

I am going to let others debate this. I have never been to St Croix, but from what I hear it is quite different from St Thomas and St John (no s).

Yes, there is definitely a different vibe on STX. Certainly larger and flatter. Not quite as touristy but still plenty of things to do. Not nearly as many cruise ships so we don't have the large swings of transient population, just a nice increase in high season, still busy in summer, quieter in the fall. Better diving. Having the big refinery along with other commercial enterprises had made for a more diverse economy even though not as much right now. We're supposed to be getting a zip line but I haven't heard anything on it since Maria. Big variety in restaurants, many upscale although our only Indian restaurant moved to STT.

If you've lived in one of the out islands in the Bahamas housing will most likely be cheaper as will shipping of goods. If you can handle the out islands of the Bahamas you will be able to handle ST Croix. Look into using Crowley or Tropical to ship your stuff here.

You can find the viya phone book on line. Im hoping some businesses have their phone lines back up from the hurricanes. But look at shipping companies. And call Pam at gallows bay Coldwell banker.

You should be able to find the number in the onlinenphone book

Thanks stxsailor, I'm looking into both those shipping choices as we speak. Yes the island that I live on now in the Bahamas is very very remote, and it's the largest island in the Bahamas. If it wasn't for the base there would really be nothing here so I'm sure I will adjust to STX well....

The refinery is currently the largest petroleum storage facility in the region. Work is currently underway to restart some, or possibly all, refining operations. Many residents here are eager to see the place up and running at full capacity again. The USVI could surely use the millions of dollars in tax revenue it lost when Hess walked away from the place years ago.

As far as coming from the Bahamas, you’ll probably be one of only a few newcomers that will find far more to do here than your current home.

Welcome to STX!
